Born in 1905 in Mexico, Chavez came to the US when she was five years old and lived in Artesia until she moved to her current dwelling in Roswell. She has been a lifelong resident of Artesia. She has five children, including Josie Walker of Artesia. The others live in Albuquerque, NM, Roswell, NM, and Sun City, Calif. She also has numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Simer celebrated her 93rd birthday on January 31, at the home of her daughter, Waunell McCoy. She was born in Knowles, NM, in 1907, to J.R. Hamilton and Nancy Sanders Hamilton. She is the youngest of 21 children. She is the only surviving member of her immediate family. She married Z.W. (Bill) Simer in Lamesa, TX, in 1925. They had three children, two of whom are deceased; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grand- children.
