Graveside services for Adelaide Elizabeth Adams, 92, will be February 25
at Carlsbad Cemetery. She died February 20 at Landsun Health Service
Center. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She
was born June 17, 1907, to John Francis "Frank" and Isabelle Holmwood
Lennon in Buffalo, NY. She married W.C. Townsend in 1934, in Durant, OK.
She later married Phillip Adams in 1952 in El Paso, TX. She was a
member of the Republican Women and Presbyterian Church. She was preceded
in death by a son, John William Townsend, in 1950, and her husband in
1966. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia T. Woolf of Carlsbad.

ADAMS, MARILYN
Graveside services for Marilyn Joyce O'Neill Adams, 69, will be
September 12 at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. She was a former Artesia
resident. She died at her home in Bradenton, FL. She was born
October 14, 1930, in Pelham Township, Ontario, Canada, to Calvin L.
O'Neill and Lucille (Dockstader) O'Neill. She married Don H. Adams on
December 28, 1988, at Carlsbad, NM. He preceded her in death on
July 22, 1997. She moved to Artesia 13 years ago from Carlsbad. She
was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Haines City, FL. Survivors
include; one daughter, Joyce A. Cash, of Bradenton, FL; one stepson,
Donnie Adams of Artesia; one stepdaughter, Margo Rixey of Truth or
Consequences, NM; one brother, C.L. "Mike" O'Neill of Haines City, FL;
nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

AHO, LELAH C
Memorial services for LELAH C. AHO, 90, will be March 5 at St. Peter's
Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery in
Rapid City, SD. She died March 2, at Lakeview Christian Home,
Northgate Unit. West Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She was born January 27, 1910, in Pierpont, SD, to Kristen and
Louisa Halland Osness. She was raised and educated in eastern
South Dakota. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD,
and Black Hills State College in Spearfish, SD. She taught school
for more than 31 years. She married Bernard E. Aho on April 12, 1933,
in South Dakota. After the death of her husband in 1982, she moved
to Carlsbad in 1984 to be closer to her children. She was a member
of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and Delta Kappa Gamma Nu, and Sons
of Norway in South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband
and one daughter, Barbara Fee in 1976. Survivors include a son,
Dr. James Aho and wife, Lori of Carlsbad; daughter, Diana Chillion
and husband, Bruce, of Marietta, Ga.; eight grandchildren and 14

ALVARADO, RUMALDO SR.
Graveside services will be held April 29, at Woodbine Cemetery for
RUMALDO ALVARADO SR. Alvarado, 77, died April 22 south of Artesia.
He was born November 27, 1922, in Fort Stockton, TX, to Secundino
Alvarado and Estefina (Rascon) Alvarado. He moved to Artesia in
1979 from Salinas, CA. He was a farm laborer and a Catholic. He
is survived by sons Rumaldo Alvarado Jr. of Artesia, Art Alvarado
of Salinas, Secundino Alvarado of Armada, Mich., Ruben Alvarado of
Monterey, CA, and Raul Alvarado of San Jose, CA; daughters Martha
Alvarado of San Jose, Luz Lopez of Salinas and Paula Alvarado of
San Jose; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents and a son, Carlos Alvarado.

A memorial service is scheduled for John F. "Andy" Anderson, 77,
for January 17 at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home. He died on
January 13 at his home. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements. He was born November 6, 1922, to Clarence Franklin
and Anna Samantha Sarah Ann Oldershaw Anderson in Groton, Mass.,
where he graduated from high school in 1941. He attended Colby
College in Maine. He was drafted and served in the Army Air Corps
at Carlsbad Air Base in 1943 where he trained Chinese bombardiers.
He was a member of Faith Baptist Church. He was preceded in death
by his first wife, Chonita Santa Cruz Anderson, in 1954; his second
wife, Barbara Mae Watson Anderson, in 1970; and a sister, Dorothy
Berchett. Survivors include his wife, Jean Anderson of Carlsbad;
sons, Wesley "Wes" F. Anderson and Steve L. Anderson Sr. of
Rockport, Texas; stepson, Terrence P. McGonagill of Carlsbad;
daughter, Cindy L. Anderson of Las Vegas; stepdaughters, Clara J.
White and Ella Mae Hodges of Carlsbad; sisters, Della Dunay of
Stafford Springs, Conn., Gertrude P. Shoemaker of Ft. Charlotte, Fla.,
and Flora Foster of New York state; 12 grandchildren; and five

No public services will be held for Louise Wills Anthony, 85,
of Corpus Christi, Texas. She died December 26, 1999. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Samuel C. Anthony, Jr. on
January 26, 1996. The couple had been married for 59 years
when he died. They married and raised their family in the
coalfields of West Virginia. Survivors include their children,
Carol Wilson of Corpus Christi, Lynn Gurin of Northboro, Mass.,
and Samuel C. Anthony III of Carlsbad; five grandchildren; and
two great-grandsons.

lifelong resident of Artesia. survivors include her parents of

her husband on May 17, 1999. Survivors include a son, Carlos Armendariz

ARMSTRONG, GLENN W.
Graveside services for Glenn W. Armstrong, 75, will be August 22 at
Carlsbad Cemetery. Military honors will be by the Carlsbad Veterans
Honor Guard. He died August 18 at Lakeview Christian Home, Northgate
Unit. West Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born
August 29, 1924, to Jacob Henry and Magdelina Thornton Armstrong in
Bogota, TX. He was raised and educated in Texas. He joined the
Army and served with the US Army Medical Corps during WWII. He
received an honorable discharge in 1949, and moved to Carlsbad. He
was recalled to active duty in 1950 and served with the ERC-Medical
Department, Fourth Army Area during the Korean Conflict. He was a
member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Carlsbad Ward.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one grand-
daughter. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Belle Armstrong, of
Carlsbad; sons, Eric Konsire Armstrong of Las Cruces, NM and Steven
Armstrong of Carlsbad; daughter, Nancy Kay Armstrong of Carlsbad;
step-sons, Terry Huffman of California, Mike Marshall of Los Lunas, NM,

Roswell, NM, for former Artesia resident Kenneth Ray Arnold of
Santa Fe, NM. Arnold, 58, died February 5 at Lovelace Clinic in
Albuquerque. Burial will be at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.
Military honors will be provided by the Roswell Veterans Honor
Guard. He was born December 18, 1941, in Chickasha, Okla., to
Daniel C. and Edna Corrine Chapman Arnold. Both parents preceded
him in death. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Patricia
Darline Arnold, and a brother, Andrew Clyde Arnold. He served in
the US Navy from 1960 to 1964. Survivors include sons Kenneth Ray
Arnold II of Michigan and John Victor Arnold of Toledo, Ohio;
brothers James Arnold of Aurora Grand, Calif., and David Arnold of

preceded in death by her parents, her oldest child, Connie O. Austin,
in 1968, and brother, Calvin Martin. survivors include her husband,
Jesse T. Austin of the Veterans Center, Truth or Consequences, NM;

Candelaria, Texas. He grew up near Valentine, Texas. In 1931,
they moved to Carlsbad. He was a pastor for many years with
several Spanish Assembly of God churches in southeast New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maria Herrera, on
December 29, 1978, and his second wife, Beatrice Gonzales, on
January 21, 1996. Survivors include sons, Paul Baiza of
Lubbock, Texas, Ish Baiza of Moab, Utah, Danny Baiza of Roswell, NM,
and Lee Baiza of Globe, Ariz.; daughter, Betty Thompson of
Carlsbad; sisters, Lupe Baiza and Anita Moreno of Carlsbad;

born on April 6, 1930, in Mt. Dora, NM, to George L. Sprouse and
Velma Leon (Turner) Sprouse. She married George W. Baker on May 11, 1945
in Carlsbad, NM. He preceded her in death on February 26, 1999. They
moved to Artesia from Roswell in 1944. She was a member of First
Presbyterian Church. She was a past member of American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include daughters, Carol Pennington of Grants, NM, Pat
Scrimshire, husband Gary, of Hobbs, NM, and Patricia Garvin, husband
Dean, of Artesia; brothers, Charles Sprouse of Clayton, NM and Ervin
Sprouse of Perryton, TX; sisters, Pat Waide of Perryton, and Ethel
Burros of Amarillo, TX; great-aunt, Lorene Christie of Roswell;

BANISTER, ARCHIE LEE "ARCH"
Services for Archie Lee "Arch" Banister, 90, will be March 29 at First
Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.
He died March 24 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Denton-Funchess Funeral
Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born February 18, 1910, to
Lawrence Ward and Henrietta Elizabeth Hughes Banister in Mangum, OK,
where he grew up on a farm and went through school. In 1938, his father
died and he became caregiver and provider for his mother, four brothers,
and two sisters. In 1950, he moved to Carlsbad. He then moved to
Roswell, NM where his younger brother, Bryan, taught him physical therapy
and reflexology. They were both blind since about age 30, but were
always self-supporting. He had been in practice in Carlsbad for many
years. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was preceded in
death by seven brothers and two sisters. Survivors include a brother,
John D. Banister of Artesia, NM; and sisters, Millie Simmons of Carlsbad

BARRAGAN, GENOVEVA R.
Services are March 29, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for
Genoveva R. Barragan, 80, of Artesia. Burial will be at Twin Oaks
Memorial Park. She died March 25 in her home. She was born in
Presidio, TX, the daughter of Pedro Rodriguez and Francisca (Palomino)
Rodriguez, on July 11, 1919. She married Manuel O. Barragan on
March 2, 1943, in Presidio. He preceded her in death on February 12, 1999.
She moved to Artesia in 1953 from El Paso, TX. Survivors include sons,
Manuel L. Barragan and Omar R. Barragan, both of Artesia; daughters,
Viola A. Vigil, Irma Cunningham and Alma Barragan, all of Roswell, NM,
and Norma Brady of Seminole, TX; sister Lydia Jimenenz of El Paso;
13 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and one step-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Martin
Barragan; sisters Josepha Rodriguez and Petra Marquez; brothers,
Raymundo Rodriguez, Alfredo Rodriguez, Alfonso Rodriguez and Narciso

BARRERA, VALERIE NICHOLE
Valerie Nichole Barrera, 21, of Las Cruces, NM, entered eternal life on
September 4, in Socorro, NM, due to an automobile accident. She was
born December 20, 1978, in Carlsbad to John and Beatrice Cardona Barrera.
She was a member of the Catholic Church. Survivors include her mother,
Beatrice Barrera; brothers, John R. and Paul Barrera; sisters, Michelle
Barrera Apadoca and husband Isaac, Julie Estrada and husband Steve, and
Stephanie Barrera of Las Cruces. Other survivors include four nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and the following
grandparents: Antonio Cardona, Josefa Garcia, Toribio Barrera and
Susie Pacheco. Calling hours for Valerie were held September 7, in
Baca's Funeral Chapels. The prayer vigil was held the same day in
St. Albert the Great Newman Center, and the funeral liturgy will be
held there today. The rite of committal will follow in Masonic Cemetery.

Barton, 76, died on March 19 at 24th and Mann. Interment will follow
at Woodbine Cemetery. He was born on December 4, 1923, in
Tahoka, TX, to Robert Frank Barton and Lillie Lorene (Coor) Barton.
He married Marie Wathen on February 6, 1943, in Lovington, NM. He
came to Artesia in 1935 from Tahoka. He was a member of First
Baptist Church, the Moose Lodge and a lifetime member of the Elks
Lodge. He served in WWII in the Army Air Corps. He is survived by
his wife, Marie, of the home; sons Larry Barton of Roswell, NM, and
Don Ray Barton of Artesia; daughter Sue Steed of Midland, TX; sisters
Ines Walden of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Juanita Conner of
Applegate, Ore.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

Ben Williams and Dovie (Edwards) Williams. She married T.A. Bledsoe
in Portales, NM on January 2, 1930. She came to Roswell at the age
of 16; lived in Hagerman for 40 years; in Roswell for 25 years;
and Artesia for two years. Her husband preceded her in death
December 20, 1973. She was also preceded in death by daughters
Wanda Lee Bledsoe and Carolyn Sue Bledsoe; and by brothers
Harlon Williams, Tommy Williams and B.F. Williams. She was a member
of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Roswell; Order of Eastern
Star; and adult Girl Scout volunteer for Troop 13. Survivors
include sons Raymond Bledsoe of Dexter, Don Bledsoe, wife Betty,
of Arlington, Texas, Tommy Bledsoe, wife Georgia, of Artesia, and

Services for Harry Easton Blenden, 77, of Lockney, TX, was held

He was born August 17, 1922, in Rockdale. He moved to Lockney in
January 1940 from Glenn. After graduation in May 1940, he worked
with his father on the farm. He was an Army veteran, having
enlisted in 1942. He spent two years in the South Pacific. He
married Dewanda Bennett on February 10, 1943, in Fresno, Calif.
He attended Texas Tech University and received his master's degree
in 1950. He moved to Pecos, TX where he was an ag instructor for
nine years. He moved to Plainview, TX in 1959 and to Lockney in
1962 where he farmed for several years. He was preceded in death
by a son, Kenneth Blenden, in 1983. Survivors include his wife,
Dewanda Blenden; sons, Elton of Johnstown, Pa., and Brad of
Amarillo, TX; brother, Dick A. Blenden of Carlsbad; sister, Sue
Thornton, of Albuquerque, NM; and six grandchildren.

He was born July 28, 1911, in Beardstown, Ill., to Lee Ross and
Maude McKenzie Blohm. He spent most of his earlier years in
foreign countries where his father worked as an American Consul.
He graduated from high school in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
He then entered the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Just prior
to graduation he was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. Because he was
unable to gain his commission, he went to work for Douglas Aircraft
in San Diego, CA. He married Elizabeth DeSollar July 5, 1936, in
Santa Monica, Calif. In 1939, his family moved to Carlsbad where he
bought the Western Auto franchise. He was a member of First
Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Blohm
of Carlsbad; sons, Robert Blohm of Carlsbad and William Blohm of
Las Cruces, NM; brother, Robert Blohm of El Paso, TX; and five

at Woodbine Cemetery in Artesia. He was born on July 19, 1923,
in Spur, TX, to the late William S. and Viola Dingler Boggs. He
was raised and educated in Artesia, and graduated from Artesia
High School. He enlisted in the US Army in November 1942, and
served as a staff sergeant in the 921st Air Engineer Squadron of
the Army Air Force for two years in England and six months in
Germany. He was married to Eulema Gean Boggs of Carlsbad in 1951
in Artesia. He was a member of VFW Post 3277. He was preceded in
death by his wife on September 6, 1999. Survivors include children
Philip Boggs and John Gregory Eager, both of Carlsbad, and Vicki
Clifton of Gilmer, TX; sister Cora Lee Montana of Albuquerque, NM;
and two grandchildren.

He preceded her in death on August 17, 1969. She was of the Christian
faith. She was also preceded in death by a step-daughter, Norma Lloyd,

by her husband, Si Bridwell on November 28, 1981, and by a son,

She preceded him in death April 25, 1994, after 34 years of marriage.

educated in Knox City, Texas. He was a veteran of WWII. He
served with the Army's 593rd Amphibious Engineers in the South
Pacific earning the rank of corporal. He married Frances Williams
58 years ago in Carlsbad. They made Carlsbad their home from
1950 to 1969 at which time they moved to Cisco, Texas. He and
his family were long time members of Bethel Baptist Church. He
was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as commander
of the Carlsbad Lakeview Post and also as district commander. He
was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American
Legion and IBEW. Survivors include his wife, Frances Clark, of the
home; son, Ronn Clark and wife, Michelle, of Irving; daughter,
Zayjean Tomerlin of Dallas; grandson, Chad Tomerlin and wife,
Bethany, of Lewisville, Texas; granddaughter, Rebekah Clark of
Irving; sister-in-law, Pat Bright of Carlsbad; nieces, Betty

She had been confirmed in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church

October 16, 1916, in Hope, NM, to John Forest and Ruby Bell Pruit
Cook. He married Wanda Johnson Cowart on December 31, 1953, in
Carlsbad at the home of her grandmother, the late
Mrs. James B. Moutray. He enlisted in the US Army at Fort Bliss, TX,
in September 1942. His first assignment was at Camp Lee, Virginia.
He was sent to the South Pacific for active duty, returning to
New Mexico and was honorably discharge January 5, 1946. While in
the service, he received the Meritorious Unit Award, Good Conduct
Medal and Victory Medal. He was a fifty year member of Carlsbad
Elks Lodge No. 1558 and belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of the home; daughter Karen
MacDonald, of Odessa, TX; granddaughter, Wanda Renee McGuire, and
great-grandchildren, Trent, Morgan Hope and Ryan of Carlsbad;
grandson, Jon Dennis and wife, Lisa, and great-grandchildren, Ana,

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Order of
Eastern Star. They came to Artesia in 1951 from Clinton, Arkansas.

family established a homestead at Hope, NM. He was a stock farmer.
He was a longtime member of the Hope Church of Christ. He was preceded

husband Van of Clovis, NM; stepdaughter Bettye Jenkins of

36 years. Upon retirement in 1992, he moved back to Carlsbad.
He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Cheri Davis, and a brother, George R. "Bob" Davis.

DeVITO, WILLIAM PAUL
Memorial services for William Paul DeVito, 22, will be March 25 at San
Jose Catholic Church. He died March 9 on a recreation dive. He was a
Carlsbad High School graduate and a Petty Officer Second Class Operation
Specialist in the US Navy. He was stationed on the island of Guam AS 40
as a Navy diver. He was born May 19, 1977, in Fairfield, CA. He
He graduated high school in 1995, attended New Mexico State University
for two years and Texas Tech University before entering the Navy in
January 1998. Following recruit training in Great Lakes, IL, he
reported to the Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic for Operation
Specialist "A" School in Dam Neck, VA. He graduated first in his class
with honors and was selected for accelerated advancement to Petty Officer
Third Class. He then reported to Panama City, FL, for Diver Second
Class School. He finished second in his class that graduated seven out
of 33 candidates. He reported aboard the USS Frank Cable in May 1999,
and was promoted to the rank of Second Class in December 1999. While
onboard the Frank Cable, he completed deployments to Sasebo and
Yokosuka, Japan, Arabia, and Singapore. He was awarded the Navy and
Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his superior performance of his duties.
As a member of Frank Cable's Dive Locker, he was instrumental in the
successful completion of 14 highly technical underwater ship husbandry
evolutions. He was also awarded the Battle "E" Ribbon. (Photo shown)

Paul Richardson Dillard of Truth or Consequences, NM. Dillard,
92, died on January 24 at the New Mexico Veterans Center in
Truth or Consequences. A former resident of Artesia, Dillard
was an attorney and practiced in Artesia, Roswell and Farmington.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a veteran of
World War II, having served in the US Army. He was born in
Waurika, Okla., on February 4, 1907, to Ralph Hays Dillard and
the former Ollie (Richardson) Dillard. He is survived by sons
David P. Dillard of Rociada, NM, and Philip H. Dillard of
Cedar City, UT; daughter Margaret D. Yoder of Highland, Calif.;
eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Irene Dixon, 90, of Portales, NM. She died August 9 at Heartland
Continuing Care Center in Portales. Wheeler Mortuary of Portales
is in charge of arrangements. She was born October 10, 1909, in
Palestine, TX, to Mabel and Alonzo Hudson. She grew up in
Hamlin, TX. She married T.E. Dixon on April 30, 1926, near
Anson, TX. The family moved to Hobbs, NM in 1937. In 1941, they
moved to Carlsbad. She remained there until 1989 when she moved to
Portales to be near her daughter. She was a member of the Jehovah's
Witness Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Morris
Hudson; sisters, Ann Renfro and Oleta Burleson; son, Melvin, on
June 14, 1975; granddaughter, Norma Jean Morgan; and husband, on
June 9, 1983. Survivors include daughters, Jean Morgan of Carlsbad,
Joanna Wilson of Portales; brother, A.L. Hudson of San Antonio; and
seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six great-great-
grandchildren.

Weed, NM, the son of Rufus M. Donaghe and Mildred E. (Winters)
Donaghe. He married Patty Lyman on December 17, 1965, in
Hagerman, NM. He was a lifelong area resident. He farmed and
ranched in the Hope area for 32 years. He was a member of Church of
Christ and a Veteran, having served in the Navy. Survivors include
his wife, Patty Donaghe, of the home; son Patrick Donaghe and wife,
Kathy, of Hope; daughter Lesli Pruitt and husband, Chris, of
Lubbock, TX; brothers Bo Donaghe of Jacksonville, FL, Dale Donaghe

Laura Jean McMillan Dudley, formerly of Carlsbad, passed away
at home in Channelview, TX, on November 17, 1999, of lung cancer.
She was born in Carlsbad on April 11, 1941, and moved to the
Houston, TX area in 1965 where she married Billy Dudley, also
formerly of Carlsbad. She was a long-time member of Channelview
Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband; sons and
daughter-in-laws, Greg and Tammie Dudley, and Steven and Rene
Dudley all of Channelview; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and
the Rev. Jonathan Fitzgerald of Golden, TX; grandchildren, Erin
and Katelynn Dudley and Caleb Fitzgerald; and 27 nieces and
nephews. She is buried next to her brother, Rusty, in

DUNAWAY, IVY SS. "IKE"
Funeral services are scheduled January 5 at Valley View Baptist
Church in Snowflake, Ariz., for Ivy S. "Ike" Dunaway of Carlsbad.
Dunaway, 83, died January 1 in Show Low, Arizona. Owens Mortuary
in Show Low is in charge of arrangements. He was born in
Fouke, Arkansas. At age 10, he moved with his family to Texas.
They later moved to Carlsbad, where he lived for many years. He
married Velma Pegmon in Carlsbad. The couple moved their family
to Snowflake, Ariz., in 1964. His wife died in 1977. He moved
back to Carlsbad, later marrying Maxine Austin in 1980 in Carlsbad.
The couple spent each Christmas in Snowflake. He served in the
Navy at the end of WWII. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in
Carlsbad. He is survived by his wife of the home in Carlsbad;
three sons, Ray Dunaway of Carlsbad, Jim Dunaway of Taylor, Ariz.,
and Jerry Dunaway of Snowflake; a daughter, Darlene Cowart of
Grants, NM; a brother, Aubrey Dunaway of Las Vegas, Nev.; two
sisters, Rose Moore of Las Cruces and Doris Neilson of
Atlantic City, NJ; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

ELIZONDO, MANUEL
The funeral for MANUEL M. ELIZONDO, 76, will be March 3 at San

with honors by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. He died
February 29 at his home. He was born December 1, 1923, to
Manuel M. and Josefina Miranda Elizondo in Carlsbad. He was a
member of the fighting Seabees during WWII, serving in Japan
and the Philippines. After the war, he returned to Carlsbad and
married Helen Terrazas on August 27, 1955. He was a member of
San Jose Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Helen, of
Carlsbad; three sons, Frank Terrazas of Phoenix, Richard Elizondo
of Carlsbad and Kenneth Elizondo of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.;
daughter, Kethleen Flores of McGregor, TX; sisters Estella
Elizondo of Monterrey Park, Calif., and Matilda Florez of Carlsbad;

ELIZONDO, MARIA
Services for Maria "Lita" Ogas Elizondo, 106, will be May 12 at San
Jose Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery. She
died May 6, at Lakeview Christian Home of the Southwest Inc., North
Canal Unit. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She was born June 28, 1893, to Jose "Isabel" Ogas and Justa Lincoln Ogas
in Santa Rosalia, Chihuahua, Mexico. She was the eldest of four children.
She would have been 107 years old this year. When she was five, her
father died and left her mother to raise her. She married Pascual
Elizondo I. The couple was only married four years before he died of
influenza. She had a daughter who died at birth, and one son, Pascual
Ogas Elizondo, who preceded her in death in 1999. Her only son, Pascual,
and his wife of 50 years, Olivia Ortega Elizondo, gave Maria 11 grand-
children. One grandson, Edwardo Ogas Elizondo, also preceded her in
death. She had lived in Carlsbad 101 years. She had been a member of
San Jose Catholic Church for about 100 years. Survivors include 10
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Evans, 90, died December 29 at Carlsbad Medical Center. West
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born
July 28, 1909, in Grayson, Ill., to Lewis E. and Barbara Ellen
Bowers Evans. He grew up in Grayson and Eldorado, Ill., and
graduated from Eldorado Township High School in 1928. He married
Mary Edna Esarey in Opdyke, Ill., on March 29, 1933. In 1952, he
moved to Carlsbad. He was a 57 year member of the Masonic Lodge.
He was initiated an Entered Apprentice on January 10, 1941, and
passed to the Degree of Fellowcraft on February 4, 1941. He was
raised to Sublime Degree of Master Mason on February 18, 1941,
in Eldorado Lodge No. 730 in Eldorado, Illinois. He was preceded
in death by his wife, both parents, four brothers, Robert, David,
Samuel and J.C., and one sister, Elizabeth. Survivors include
a son, Stanley Evans and wife, Sharon of Carlsbad; daughter, Edna
Kelly and husband, Larry, of Houston, Texas; sister Barbara
Prehara of Evansville, Ind.; two granchildren, Evan Kelly of
Frisco, Colo., and Joanna Kelly of New York City; three step-
grandchildren, John E. Guck, Anthony H. Guck and David A. Guck;
and six great-grandchildren.
