She was preceded in death by her husband, James Herbert "Jim" Brown; one son, George Walter Brown; and brother, James Walter O'Hearn. She is survived by daughters, Mary Eileen Quillin and husband Earl of Carlsbad, Sabra Brown Steinsiek and husband Will of Albuquerque, Shannon Sue Flynn and husband Mark of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., and son James Andrew Brown of Leavenworth, Kan., as well as eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mary was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Dutch Harbor on the Aleutian Island of Unalaska, Alaska, to Mary Sorokin and William George O'Hearn. The family soon emigrated to Tacoma, Wash., where her only brother, James Walter O'Hearn was born in 1924. After the death of her mother when Mary was only 6, she was raised by her father and aunt, Mary Louise O'Hearn Johnson, and the family eventually settled in San Pedro, Calif., where she graduated from San Pedro High School and attended San Pedro Junior College. When her best friend's boyfriend picked them up to chase a fire engine, Mary was forced to sit in the lap of passenger James Herbert Brown whom she married at home on April 6, 1940, with the downstairs neighbor playing the wedding march. They were married 43 years when Jim passed away in 1983. During World War II, she made wing frames for airplanes. She worked at a variety of other jobs throughout her life from restaurant cook to the post office and, finally as church secretary to her son-in-law at Carlsbad's Hillcrest United Methodist Church, but her number one priority was always raising her family. She loved babies, her own and others, and somehow made a mechanic's salary stretch to feed seven people with room for friends at the table as well. She read cookbooks like other people read novels. She and Jim moved to Carlsbad in July 1951 to be near her brother and his family. Mary was active in P.T.A. for all five children, often room mother, and always attended every show, awards ceremony, game or concert that her children participated in. An excellent seamstress, she was responsible for everyday clothes as well as costumes for Girl Scout and school activities. She was Commander of the local Navy Mother's Club while son George served in Vietnam and was State Adjutant for the organization. A past member of the Carlsbad Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, she was also active in the Lion's Club ladies auxiliary. After her husband's death, Mary got involved in the Happy Homemakers Extension Club and was named Homemaker of the Year in 1990. Always an avid reader, she passed that love on to her children. Later in life, she was able to indulge in traveling with her husband in the United States and especially loved visiting the mountains. Eventually, she realized her dream of visiting England, Ireland and Scotland. A woman with many friends, Mary will be remembered for her kindness to others, her great laugh and her devoted mothering.
