The following excerpts were taken from page 14 - The Artesia (NM) Daily Press - December 26, 1999 LANDRETH No services are scheduled for former Artesia resident Ezell Landreth of Carlsbad, NM. Landreth, 80, died on December 20 at Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad. Cremation has taken place. Landreth was born on January 31, 1919, to Charles Calloway Landreth and Viola Grace Wallace Landreth (later Horton) in Centrahoma, Okla. He was a Choctaw Indian and attended Indian boarding schools at Antlers and Ardmore, Okla. He married Vera Alice Hallum on October 7, 1937. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He taught and was a superintendent of schools in Cloud Chief, Frances and Fitzhugh, Oklahoma. He began teaching in Artesia in 1959. He is survived by sons David H. Landreth and Raymond Landreth, both of Carlsbad, and Vernon E. Landreth of Norman, Okla.; brother John Landreth of Carlsbad; sisters Patricia Marine of Catoosa, Okla., Johnola Rowe of Rocky Mountain, Virginia, Sabra Ann Landreth and Mahanna Jo Landreth; nine granchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1991; daughter Betty Lou Landreth in 1998; and sisters Alla Viola Bradford and Linda Stockman. ******************************************************************** The following excerpts were taken from Page 6A - The Carlsbad (NM) Current Argus - January 23, 2000 LEWIS, DOUG A memorial service is scheduled for Doug Lewis, 50, on January 24 at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation has taken place. Lewis died January 18 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albuquerque, NM. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born June 25, 1949, to August Charles and Betty E. Fiddes Lewis in Cleveland. He grew up in the Cleveland area. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam conflict. He had moved to Albuquerque in the early 1980's where he worked at Kirtland Air Force Base. He married Darla Taylor on November 28, 1985 in Albuquerque. They moved to Carlsbad about 12 years ago. He was a member of the DAV. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Darla Lewis of Carlsbad; sons, Doug A. Lewis, Jr. of Cleveland, Steve Herbel of Carlsbad and Stacy Halley of Missoula, Mont.; daughters, Lisa Lewis of Cleveland and Dawn Mason of Artesia; brothers, August C. Lewis Jr. and Ralph E. Lewis of Cleveland; and five grandchildren. She died January 27 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born on September 9, 1921, to Jesse and Rebecca "Bessie" Hayes Magby in Dog Canyon. She lived in the area most of her life. She married James David "Dee" Lewis on August 2, 1940, in Alamogordo, NM. They ranched at Panama Ranch from 1960 to 1980. In 1980 they moved to Hope, NM and then to Carlsbad in 1998. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by five brothers, three sisters and her husband on October 1, 1998. Survivors include two sisters, Jewel Holley and Josephine Offut of Carlsbad. Mattie Irene Lewis was born March 2, 1899, in Alma, Tenn., to William Truitt and Susanna Keeton Newport. The centenarian was a 50 year resident of Carlsbad. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Evalyn Lynch, on March 11, 1988. Survivors include a daughter, Lois Hardy of Denver, CO; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 12 great- great-grandchildren; and six great-great-great-grandchildren. Leyba of 1506 N. 10th. Leyba, 85, died on November 20 at Artesia General Hospital. Interment followed at San Marcos Cemetery. Leyba was born on October 11, 1914, in Dayton, NM, to Jose Jimenez and Gregoria (Orona) Jimenez. She married Carlos G. Leyba on February 10, 1942, in Carlsbad, NM. She is survived by her husband, Carlos G. Leyba Sr. of the home; sons Alfredo Leyba and wife Edna of Hobbs, NM, Sammy J. Leyba Sr., wife Yolanda, of Odessa, Texas, and Carlos J. Leyba Jr., wife Esther, of Artesia; daughter Angelita Carrera, husband Alberto, of Artesia; sisters Josephine Leyba of Artesia and Lucy Catano of Farmington, NM; daughter-in-law Loraine Leyba of Silver City; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was born March 9, 1939, in Waldron, Ark., to Orbin and Verneal Ruff Little. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1957 and had been a long time resident of Carlsbad. She married J.E. Loftis on December 29, 1960, in Grants, NM. She was a member of Southside Church of Christ.
