A memorial service is scheduled for January 8, for Alberta
MacDougall, 82.  It will be hald at First Presbyterian Church.
Cremation has taken place.  She died January 5 at Covenant Medical
Center in Lubbock, Texas.  Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in
charge of the arrangements.  She was born on March 19, 1917, to
Albert E. and Mabel Henrietta Jacobson Farnam in Randolph, Neb.,
where she attended school.  She moved to Wayne, Neb., where she
graduated from Colleg High School.  She attended three years at
Teacher's College, now Wayne State University, earning her teaching
degree.  She married Scott Franklin "Scotty" MacDougall on 
June 26, 1938, in Mead, Nebraska.  She was a member of First
Presbyterian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband
on April 12, 1993.  Survivors include a daughter, Ann Adams of
Gilbert, Ariz.; sister, Maxine Johnson of Santa Clara, Calif.;

Alfredo and Juanita Armendarez.  She married Antonio Macias on
July 2, 1976, in Odessa, TX.  She moved to Eunice from El Paso, TX
in 1990.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother,
Daniel Armendarez.  Survivors include her husband, Antonio Macias
of El Paso; son, Antonio Macias Jr. of Eunice; daughters, Brenda
Macias and Tanya Macias of Eunice; brothers, Ben Armendarez of

MAGNUSSON
Closed casket services are scheduled for Monday, September 27
at Terpening and Son Chapel, for Blanche Magnusson of Mineral
Wells, TX.  Magnusson, 85, died on September 22 at the Artesia
Good Samaritan Center.  Interment will follow at Woodland Park
Cemetery in Mineral Wells, TX.  She was born August 6, 1914,
in Asher, OK, to Peter P. Berry and Cora Ann (Everett) Berry.
She married Kenneth L. Magnusson on October 13, 1942, in 
Roswell, NM.  He preceded her in death in February 1992. She 
came to Artesia in 1993 from Alabama.  She was a member of North
Oak Church of Christ in Mineral Well.  She is survived by a son,
Larry Magnusson of Palmer, Alaska; brother H.G. Berry of Artesia;
sister Lucy Mae Douglass of Artesia; and several grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse P. Berry, and a nephew.

MANLOVE
Graveside services for Lonnie K. Manlove, 64, will be January 10 at
Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.  Military honors will be by the
Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard.  He died January 6 at University
Medical Center in Albuquerque, NM.  West Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements.  He was born November 24, 1935, in Robstown, TX,
to Lewis and Zelva Sifford Manlove.  In 1942, his family came to
Carlsbad.  He joined the Air Force in 1953 serving with the Air
Force as a 2nd Engineer until his discharge May 1, 1956.  At that
time, he moved to Louisiana.  He then returned three years later to 
Carlsbad.  He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Survivors include three daughters, Lynda Manlove of Carlsbad, Laura
Kay Stevenson of Artesia, NM, and Lisa Manlove of Santa Fe, NM;
and five grandchildren.

Services are scheduled Thursday, October 7, at Our Lady Of
Grace Catholic Church for Cruz Cortez Marquez of 402 Kemp.
Marquez, 87, died on October 4 at her home.  Interment will
follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Park.  A rosary is set for
Wednesday, October 6, at Our Lady of Grace.  She was born on
October 29, 1911, in Presidio, Tex., to Mauro Cortez and
Maria (Ornelas) Cortez.  She married Luis M. Marquez on 
February 1, 1936, in Artesia.  He preceded her in death on 
January 28, 1998.  She was a member of Our Lady Of Grace 
Catholic Church.  She is survived by sons Manuel Marquez and
Fred Marquez, both of Albuquerque, NM, and Elijio Marquez
and David Marquez, both of Longview, Tex.; daughters Delia
Olguin of Artesia and Luisa Olivas, Ophelia Marquez and 
Mary Estrada, all of Odessa, Tex.; brothers Andres Cortez of
Hobbs, NM, Juan Cortez of Tucson, Ariz., Mauro Cortez of 
Mora, NM, and Daniel Cortez of Artesia; sister Francisca Saiz
of Artesia; foster brothers Refugio Cervantes of Artesia and
Crispin Lara of El Paso, Tex., numerous grandchildren.  She
was preceded in death by sons Rogelio Marquez and Luis
Marquez, Jr., two brothers and a sister.

MARTIN, MONA
Funeral services are scheduled for Mona Alzugary Martin, 85, on
January 18, at Fox and Lake Church of Christ.  Interment will follow
at Carlsbad Cemetery.  She died January 15 at Carlsbad Medical
Center.  Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She was born August 31, 1914, to Thomas and Bonnie Norfleet at
Running Water Draw near Olton, Texas.  As a young child, the family
moved to Silver, Texas, and then to Lovington, NM, where she
graduated from high school in 1931.  Soon after graduation, she
married Marion Alzugary in Carlsbad on October 2, 1931.  The couple
ranched on the Graham Ranch near Hobbs in Lea County.  They moved
to Carlsbad in the early 1940's.  Marion was a successful rancher
until his death in 1967.  In September 1969, she married Earl
Martin.  He preceded her in death on February 6, 1995.  In addition
to her husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, J.T. and
Herman Norfleet.  She is survived by a brother, Ned Norfleet of

MARTIN, THOMAS
A memorial service is scheduled for Thomas L. Martin, 79, on
January 8, at Epworth United Methodist Church.  He died on
January 5 at his home.  Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements.  He was born October 22, 1920, in Carlsbad to
Thomas B. and Delia Calvani Martin.  He attended St. Edwards
Catholic School and Carlsbad High School.  He joined the Navy in
1942 where he attended the Point Loma Radar School.  He received
advanced training in Little Creek, Va.  He was assigned to a
destroyer escort serving 2 1/2 years and in five major invasions.
His ship was part of the lead destroyer group, which entered
Tokyo Bay at Japan's surrender.  He married Velam Jean Lindsey on
August 28, 1948, in Carlsbad.  He was a longtime member of Epworth
United Methodist Church.  He was the Master of Felix Lodge No 29
AF & AM and past Master of Eddy Lodge No. 21 AF & AM.  He was a
member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, VFW Lakeside
Post No. 3277, and the National Rifle Association.  He was preceded
in death by a sister.  Survivors include his wife, Jean Martin of 
Carlsbad; daughter, Rhonda West of Carlsbad; sisters, Lillian Seal
and Bobbye Dean Rogers of Carlsbad; five grandchildren; and three

Former Artesia resident William Franklin "Junior" Martin Jr. of
Bayfield, CO, died on September 16.  Martin, 72, was born in

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Holt of Bayfield; son Delbert,
wife Evonne, of Reno, NV; daughter Rita Henderson of Bayfield;
brothers and sisters Alta Walker, Billie Laman, Jimmy Martin and
Effie Montgomery, all of Artesia, and Willie Martin of Las Vegas,
Nevada.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a
brother.

MAYES
Graveside services are December 3, at Woodbine Cemetery for 
Chester Ridge Mayes of 911 S. Roselawn.  Mayes, 99, died on
December 1 at his home.  Mayes was born on February 8, 1911
at Groves, Okla., to Ridge P. Mayes and Hattie (Bosse) Mayes.
He married Virginia Atwood on July 26, 1935, in Roswell, NM.
She preceded him in death on March 11, 1993.  They came to 
Artesia in 1938.  He was owner/operator of Mayes Lumber Co.
until his retirement in 1975.  He is survived by a daughter, 
Annetta Powell, husband Bob, of Roswell; sister Elizabeth
Madison of Roswell; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by
a son Bill Mayes, on May 5, 1999.

McClure was born on August 27, 1927, in Radley, Kansas, the
daughter of Matthew Hudson and Sarah Fox.  She married Frank
McClure in Oswego, Kansas on January 31, 1944.  She came to

Austin McGill and Flora Temple Hamilton in Stockton, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by

Marjorie Leitch of Farmington, NM; sisters Patsy Lott of

Church service for Cecile McMath of Muleshoe, Texas, is February 12

Bailey County Cemetery in Muleshoe.  McMath, 95, died on February 6
at her residence.  She was born on April 29, 1904, in Alvord, TX.
She married Charles M. McMath in Alvord on May 23, 1922.  He 
preceded her in death in 1969.  She moved to Muleshoe in 1960
from Amarillo, TX.  She was a member of New Covenant Church of 
Muleshoe.  She and her husband were licensed and ordained ministers
of the gospel.  Survivors include nieces Shirley Foster and Irene
Hokett of Artesia, and Nelva Dean Johnson of Port Angeles, Wash.;
nephews, Claude C. Nivens of Lebanon, Tenn., and Dennis Nivens of
Grapevine, TX; and sister-in-law Mrs. Claude Nivens of Artesia.

Church for Mortimer M. Merritt, 86, with burial following at

Merritt died January 8 at Landsun Health Service Center.  Denton-
Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  He was born
January 27, 1913, in Fairbanks, Alaska, to Howard M. Merritt and
Mary Lettie Mero Merritt.  He grew up in San Diego, California.  He
graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute and the University
of Arizona.  While serving in the Army, he rose to the rank of
Lieutenant colonel.  Prior to moving to Landsun Center in 1994, he 
had resided in Midland, Texas, for 39 years.  He was preceded in
death by his devoted wife of 42 years, Ellen M. Merritt, in 1998,
and his brother, Robert M. Merritt.  He is survived by a son,
Laurance H. Merritt of Ojai, Calif.; a daughter, Mary B. Merritt
of Orlando, Florida; three loving stepdaughters, Karen E. Johnson
of Carlsbad, Elodie E. Brown of Midland, Texas, and Mary M. MacConnel
of San Diego, Calif; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and
his friends and caregivers Richard and Minnie Parraz of Carlsbad.

Bert Nelson Muncy Jr., of Ruidoso, NM.  Muncy, 80, died on

October 26, 1919, in Artesia to Bert Nelson Muncy Sr. and Stella
(Chatten) Muncy.  He married Margaret Mahone in 1938 in 
Globe, AZ.  He was a lifelong Artesia resident.  He was a member
of First United Methodist Church in Artesia.  He is survived
by his wife, Margaret Mahone Muncy of Ruidoso; sons A. Nelson
Muncy of Artesia and Martin B. Muncy of Albuquerque, NM; two
grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.  He was preceded in 
death by his parents and a sister, Elizabeth.
