She died August 18 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell, NM. Cremation will take place under the direction of Sunset Gardens Direct Cremation Service. She was born in New York and moved to Carlsbad in 1996. Survivors include a son, Ralph Cosenza; daughters, Carol Hahn and Carmela Lopez; sisters, Marianne Alberto and Josephine Ioimo; brothers, John Napoli Sr. and Charles Napoli of California; and four grandchildren. She died August 10 in San Jose. Darling and Fischer Garden Chapel of San Jose was in charge of arrangements. She was preceded in death by sons, Elisio Jr. and Danny Navarrette. Survivors include her husband, Elisio Navarrette; daughters, Elsie Yee and Dianna Wagner; and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. ************************************************************************* The following excerpts were taken from Page 6A - The Carlsbad (NM) Current Argus - February 20, 2000 NAVARRO, YSABEL 'CHAVEL' VEGA Services for Ysabel "Chavel" Vega Navarro, 59, will be February 22 at San Jose Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery. He died February 18 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. West Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born January 13, 1941, in Shafter, TX, to Isidoro and Relles Vega Navarro. His family moved to Loving, NM, where he was raised and educated. He became a civilian volunteer in the Ground Ovserver Corps during Operation Skywatch from 1952 to 1959. For this, he received recognition of invaluable assistance to the Air Defense of the United States and the Civilian Defense Agency of New Mexico. He married Angelina Rodriguez on July 30, 1960. They moved to Carlsbad in 1963. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ramon, Carmen, Jesus and Jose Navarro; and two sisters, Dolores Montez and Maria Mendoza. He is survived by his wife; a son, Chavel Navarro Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; three daughters, Teresa Cruz and Valerie Navarro of Carlsbad and JoAnn Amaro of Hawaiian Gardens, CA; his mother of Loving; five sisters, Paula Martinez of Las Cruces, NM, Margarita Parraz and Tomasa Villareal of Carlsbad, Manuela Echavarria of Loving and Valentina Murillo of Lovington, NM; and 11 grandchildren. Memorial services are scheduled for Mildred C. Neal, 92, on January 24 at First United Methodist Church. Cremation has taken place. Neal died January 22 at Landsun Health Service Center. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born December 30, 1907, in Crowell, Texas to Wallace and Allie Poag Cogdell. She was a teacher and librarian in Texas and New Mexico. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Allen Cogdell, Ralph Cogdell, Weldon Cogdell and John Cogdell, and two sisters, Nancy Cogdell and Bonnie Brothers. She was born November 19, 1922, to Walter Trail and Louise Hanshaw Trail in Holden, Logan Co., W. VA, where she grew up. She married Elza Curtis Neece on June 22, 1946. They moved to Carlsbad in 1959. She was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 30. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William "Bill" Trail; four sisters, Edna Dunnavant, Ruth Gilpin, Bonnie Trail and Mabel Trail; and her husband on December 4, 1986. Survivors include a son, Robert Neece of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Brenda Goodson of Carlsbad; sisters, Janira Trail Solchik of Holden, W. VA, and Helen Trail Ferrell of Hewett, W. VA; one granddaughter, Shara Browning and husband, Steve, of Carlsbad; and two great-grandsons, Steven Browning and Kyle Browning of Carlsbad. (Photo shown) ************************************************************************ The following excerpts were taken from Page 6A - The Carlsbad (NM) Current Argus - January 12, 2000 NETHERLIN, RAYMOND Funeral services are scheduled for Raymond Netherlin, 87, of Artesia, on January 14, at First Christian Church in Artesia. Netherlin died January 9 in McAllen, Texas. Raymond Netherlin was born April 18, 1912, in Tularosa, NM to Albert and Mary Cole Netherlin. He moved to the Artesia area in 1928 and graduated from Artesia High School in 1931. He was a WWII veteran serving in Africa, Italy and France. He married Frances Emmons on February 17, 1946. He was a rancher. He was preceded in death by brothers, Alton Netherlin of Ajo, Ariz., Loyd Netherlin of Phoenix, Ariz., and a sister, Opal Lee of Lakewood, NM. Survivors include his wife, Frances, of the home; son, Bill, of Artesia; sister, Jean Fallin of McAllen, Texas; and one grandson. ******************************************************************* The following excerpts were taken from Page 8 - The Artesia (NM) Daily Press - February 29, 2000 NIVENS, RUBY DEAN Services will be March 1 at Faith Baptist Church for Ruby Dean Nivens. Nivens, 86, died February 27 at her home. Burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. She was born November 11, 1913, in Eastland, TX the daughter of Luther Henry Reed and Zelma Lee (Savell) Reed. She married Claude Eston Nivens on April 5, 1934, in Hagerman, NM. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1986. She came to Artesia in 1934 from Texas, moved to Loco Hills, NM in 1945 and returned to Artesia in 1976. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and also was a member of the Artesia Genealogical Club. Survivors include sons Claude Carrolton Nivens of Lebanon, Tenn., and Hollis, NH, and Dennis Reed Nivens of Grapevine, TX; daughters Shirley Ann Foster of Artesia, Nelva Dean Johnson of Port Angeles, Wash., and Ruby Irene Hokett of Artesia; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Smith. "MARTI" Marta E. "Marti" Nunez died April 17, at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, TX. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held April 24 at St. Edwards Catholic Church. Cavillo Funeral Home of Lubbock is in charge of arrangements. She was born October 4, 1936 and raised in Alajuela, Costa Rica. She became an R.N. in 1958. In 1968 she came to California and worked at the Medical Center of North Hollywood for 25 years. In 1994, she moved to Carlsbad with her cousins Maria B. Wheeler and Isabel Aguilar and her friend, Mary Jane Popham. She worked at the hospital and with Home Care until her retirement in 1998. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. survivors include a brother, a sister, three daughters and seven grandchildren in Costa Rica. ******************************************************************** The following excerpts were taken from Page 8 - The Artesia (NM) Daily Press - March 29, 2000 OCCUPIN, MARY ROBERTA ROCKETT Graveside services were March 27 at Fairlawn Cemetery in Cushing, OK, for former Artesia resident Mary Roberta Rockett Occupin, 83. She died on March 23 in Tulsa, OK. She was born on November 12, 1916, in Sallisaw, OK, to Clarence and Ida Taylor. "APACHE" Services will be February 19 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Pablo C. "Apache" Ortega. Ortega, 62, died February 16 in Artesia. Burial wil be at Woodbine Cemetery. He was born January 15, 1938, in Alpine, Texas, to Barnabe Ortega and Maria (Chavez) Ortega. He married Gloria Duran in Artesia, on November 9, 1965. He came to Artesia in 1946 from Alpine, Texas. Survivors include his wife of the home; sons Mario Ortega of Casa Grande, Ariz., Jimmy Ortega of Lovington, NM, Arthur Ortega, Jerry Ortega and Paul Ortega Jr., all of Artesia; daughters Mary Lee Ruiz of Minturn, Colo., Elva Viquez of Anaheim, Calif., Barbara McFatridge of Artesia and Rita Ortega of Ballenger, Texas; brothers Goyo Ortega of Fort Stockton, Texas, Barney Ortega of Dallas, TX, Henry Ortega of Las Vegas, Adolfo Ortega of Artesia, David Ortega of Roswell, NM, Israel Ortega of Brownwood, TX, and Kelly Ortega of Denver, Colo.; sisters Anita Franco of Carlsbad, Eva Ortega, Emma Roblez of Artesia and Minga Rodriguez of Lovington; 35 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Burial will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrange- ments. He was born on May 23, 1976 in Carlsbad, to Mike G. Ortiz and Vera Varela Ortiz. He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1994. He was active with Caveman baseball and basketball. He played drums in the Caveman Band and was an accomplished artist. He was a member of San Jose Catholic Church, for which he served as an altar boy for about six years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Michelle, and a grandfather, Jose Ortiz. He is survived by a son, Ivan Rodriguez of Carlsbad; a daughter, Markiahna Rain Ortiz of Carlsbad; his parents of Carlsbad; two brothers, Michael Angelo Ortiz of Midland, Texas, and Dario Arthur Ortiz of Carlsbad; paternal grandparent, Margarita Gonzales Menjares of Carlsbad; and maternal grandparents, Jose and Socorro Varel of Dexter, NM. "JACK" Memorial services for J.W. "JACK" OWENS, 92, of Grenville, was held March 2 at Alderette Pomeroy Chapel. Interment followed at the Grenville cemetery. He died February 28, at Miners Colfax Medical Center. Alderette Pomeroy Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. He was born May 7, 1908, in Pottsville, TX. He moved to New Mexico with his parents in 1917, where the family homesteaded in Gladstone. He married Ione Cherry, June 22, 1931. He was owner of Owens Auto Body and Paint in Raton, NM. While operating this shop, Mr. Owens built the first vehicle that later evolved into the Chevrolet El Camino and Ford Ranchero. Later he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring as an engineer. He is preceded in death by his parents John G. and Verna Owens; sisters Vera Hall, Lillie Mahannah, Winona Elam and Beatrice Vann; and brother, Lonnie. He is survived by his wife, Ione, of Raton; daughters Sue Ley of Raton, and Linda Servold and husband, Jack, of Carlsbad; son, John W.
