The following excerpts were taken from Page 6A - The Carlsbad (NM) Current Argus - March 2, 2000 RAMIREZ, FEDERICO "FRED" HINOJOS Funeral services will be March 4 at San Jose Catholic Church in Carlsbad, NM for FEDERICO "FRED" HINOJOS RAMIREZ, 82, of Artesia. He died March 1 at his home. Interment will follow at Santa Catarina Cemetery in Carlsbad. He was born May 25, 1917, to Pasqual Ramirez and Carlota Hinojos Ramirez in Ruidosa, TX. He moved to Otis, NM in 1946. He worked on the Weems Farm for 33 years. He married Paulita Navarrette in 1949. He moved to Artesia in 1998. He was preceded in death by a son, Raul, in 1976, and by his wife in 1985. He is survived by a son, Benjamin Ramirez of Artesia; brothers Ruben Ramirez and Frank Ramirez, both of Carlsbad; sisters Jesusita Vasquez, Eloisa Sanchez and Adele Rascon, all of Carlsbad, and Aurora Navarette of Loving, NM; three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren. Reynolds, 85, died on January 12 at Tuttle. Interment will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Park in Artesia. She was born on January 7, 1915, in Little Rock, Miss., to Jodie Smith and Ava (Wansley) Smith. She married Charles Henry Reynolds on April 8, 1933, in Newton, Miss. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1988. They came to Artesia in 1937 from Mississippi, then moved to the Tuttle area in 1992. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Artesia. She is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Bisbee, husband Jerry, of Bridge Creek, Okla.; sisters Evelyn Jenkins and Roberta Williams both of Little Rock; sisters- in-law Hazel Smith of Little Rock and Rose Lowery, husband Alton, of Silver City; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. She attended St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas, where she attained her R.N. degree in 1933. She moved to Carlsbad in 1934 and became an officer in the US ARMY Medical Corps from 1943 to 1946. She served during WWII in New Orleans and in the Philippines. He was a native of Dallas, TX, but had lived in Carlsbad as a youth, graduating from Carlsbad High School in 1944. He attended Hardin-Simmons University. After serving time with the Navy, he made his home in Concord, CA, where he had lived for the past 45 years. He was a deacon associated with the Southern Baptist Convention and was a member of the Society of American Magicians, Assembly No. 112. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Riddle, of the family home; sons, Gary Riddle of Vacaville, CA, and Doug Riddle of Flagstaff, AZ; daughter, Marsha Davis of Pittsburg, CA; father, Tom D. In 1991, he married Beatrice G. Orr. She preceded him in death on March 9, 1999. Survivors include sons, Asa Rogers of Carlsbad, Melton Rogers of Dolan Springs, AR, and Dennis Rogers of Capitan, NM; daughter, Carolyn Fletcher of Carlsbad; brother, F.W. They came to Carlsbad in 1986. She was a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church for many years. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. He preceded her in death on May 6, 1986. She moved to Artesia from San Patricio, NM, in 1948. She as a member of Our Lady of Grace. Survivors include sons Eloy Salsberry of Artesia, Martin Sedillo of Hobbs, NM, and Danny Sedillo of Artesia; daughters Natalia Sosa, Della Lopez, and Ellie Segura, all of Artesia, and Cerinia Salmon of Lovington, NM; brother Tranquelino Montoya of Ruidoso, NM; sister Josephine Baca of Ruidoso Downs, NM; 31 grandchildren; 40 great- grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Lorraine "Lucky" Shirley was born May 12, 1931, in Hartford, Conn. She was raised and educated in Hartford, graduating from high school there. She and her dad moved to Raton, NM after her graduation. She became a horse trainer for the racetrack in Raton. She married Chesley " Tex" Shirley on January 19, 1956. They formed a band named " The Best of Tex and Lucky, The Traveling Sweethearts" and performed throughout New Mexico and the Southwest. Tex died in July 1980. She then moved to Loving, NM. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include sons, Darwin D. Shirley of Seminole, Texas, and Warren D. "Flip" Shirley of Caldwell, Texas; daughters, Debara B. He married Floy Townsend in Artesia on March 9, 1941. He is survived by his wife; sons Ben J. She preceded him in death on August 3, 1997. He moved to Artesia from Hope, NM, in 1945. His professional life was spent in the field of education. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was a Worthy Grand Patron Order of Eastern Star for the state of New Mexico in 1947-48 and served as Watchman of the Shepherds for White Shrine of Jerusalem. Survivors include a son Arba Stinnett of Novato, Calif.; a daughter Rosemary Harral of Golden, Colo.; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be today at First Presbyterian Church in Ardmore, OK, for former Artesia resident T.C. Stromberg of Ardmore. Stromberg, 87, died April 22 at an Ardmore hospital. He was born September 18, 1912, in Purcell, OK, the son of the late Hugo J. and Adele Mable Woods Stromberg. He married June B. Helton on December 6, 1936, in Grandfield, OK. He had been an Ardmore resident for many years, moving there at the age of 6 and graduating from Ardmore High School. He then attended and graduated from business school at the University of Oklahoma. He served in the US Navy in aviation during WWII. He lived in Artesia for 43 years, where he owned and operated Artesia Lumber Company. He returned to Ardmore in 1984. He was born June 5, 1920, in Stony Run Township near Clarkfield, Minn., to Hans J. and Minnie Mickelson Stueland. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1939, he graduated from high school. He inlisted in the Air Force serving in WWII as a nose gunner of a B-24 Liberator in the South Pacific. He married Norma Nelson in 1945. Following an honorable discharge from the service, he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. He and his wife moved to Carlsbad in 1985 after living in Moline, Ill., and Dubuque, Iowa, designing and testing John Deere tractors for 37 years. While living in Dubuque, he was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1986; sister, Ruby Oxtra; and five brothers, Arthur, Clifford, Harold, Reuben, and Richard.
