EDDY COUNTY, NEW MEXICO
LOOKOUT CEMETERY RECORDS
(Near Malaga, NM)
Records extracted by Richard Wilkinson
Typing by Richard Wilkinson Jan 2000
Submittal by Richard Wilkinson Jan 2000
The LOOKOUT Cemetery is also referred to by some people as the Malaga
Cemetery. However, is it correctly known as "Lookout". The following
information was taken from a special publication of the "Current-Argus"
in February 2000 "Our Town 2000". Lookout was a settlement from the
1890's
to the 1900's. It was on the mail stage route from Pecos, TX to Roswell,
NM
and a cattle trail from from Texas to Kansas. It was then in Lincoln
County.
Jesse J. Rascoe was the founder of Lookout. The early settlers lived
in
dugouts that they dug into the river bank of Black River. In late 1885
the
population was about 350 people. The town lost its people after the
railroad
announced that it would not be going through the settlement. Many relocated
to nearby Malaga and Loving. There are many young people buried here
that
died from a typhoid breakout in 1909.
Surnames of the Settlement of Lookout that were on the Sept. 1, 1885
Territorial Census, Precinct 7:
Anderson, Benson, Bishop, Black, Blair, Bond, Brown, Carr, Cass, Clark,
Coats, Danner, Denman, Drivers, Duncan, Frier, Gabbret, Harris, Harrison,
Hoffman, Hopper, Howard, Jernigan, Johnson, Livingston, Lucas, Markham,
McKinney, Nash, Neeley, Paddleford, Parrish, Pearce, Phillips, Plowman,
Putman, Ramer, Rascoe, Reed, Robbins, Robinson, Rutledge, Slaughter,
Smith,
Stewart, Stockman, Stuart, Trueblood, Tucker, Wadkins, Yose, Young,
Welsh,
White and Williams.
This is a very old and very run down cemetery. There are more unmarked
sites
than marked ones. Many are marked only with an old wooden cross that
has
fallen and come apart. The carvings on the wood can't even be read
on most
of them. Many have stone or concret markers that can no longer be read.
Because of the difficulty in reading so many of the names on the different
mediums of markers, some will only have names, some will only have
a date,
and a couple will only be initials. Several markers were in Spanish
and the
spelling was not correct on some or the words were run together. In
these
cases, I have attempted to translate the best I can with the help of
my
Hispanic in-laws.
If you are researching your family and know beyond a doubt that you
have an
ancestor buried in this cemetery, please contact me to have the name
added to
this list: Richard Wilkinson <jrrrr@pvtnetworks.net>.
To get to this cemetery:
Going south on the Pecos Highway (Hwy 285) from the Loving, NM City
Limits,
go 3/10 miles and turn right. This will be county road 716, also known
as
Higby Hole Road. Go 2.2 miles south and turn right on Ogden Road (County
Road 718). Go another 3/10 miles to a dirt road on the left with a
gate.
This will be private property but the public seems to be allowed because
the
gate will not be locked. Follow this private farm road to two other
gates
that are side by side. Enter the one on the left and continue to the
south
until you come to the cemetery that will be on the left 6/10 of a mile
from
Odgen Road.
