ANDREWS, CECIL R.
JONESBORO, Ark. - Funeral services for Cecil Reeder Andrews,
84, of Jonesboro, Ark., were held at Langford-Bookout
Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro on April 19. Burial
followed in the Caraway, Ark., cemetery.
Mr. Andrews died Friday, April 15, 2005, in the Veterans
Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
He worked as a miner for U.S. Potash in Carlsbad from 1956
to 1965. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Perry and
Treva Andrews, of Artesia.

Mrs. Bartlett died Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Carlsbad
Medical Center.

Nila Maye Bartlett was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Katemcy, Texas,
to Ervin Joe and Emma Lee Teague Russell. She was raised and
educated in Texas.
She married James Otis Bartlett on Oct. 2, 1940, in Loving.
They moved to Carlsbad in 1943 from Brady, Texas.
Nila enjoyed oil painting, ceramics and working in her
cactus and rose gardens, but her real love was for her
family. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Nila was raised in the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Otis of the
family home; sons, Larry Steve Bartlett and wife Millie of
Odessa, Texas, and James Mark Bartlett and wife Cheryl of
Alpine, Texas; daughter, Sandra Bailey and husband Gary of
Baytown, Texas; sister, Lessie Nobles of Carlsbad; seven
grandchildren, Susan Baker and Karen Moss both of Baytown,
Texas, Kristy Robertson of Nashville, Tenn., Steven Bartlett
of Odessa, Texas, and Leann Bartlett and Melissa Bartlett
both of Alpine, Texas; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Jimmy Bennett, Brady Bennett, Ronnie Lackey,
Darrell Moss, Cody Moss, Hubert Atkinson, Chris Exxum and
Sherman Christian.

Mrs. Birchell passed away Thursday, April 7, 2005, at
Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

Peggy Birchell was born Sept. 29, 1918, in Wellington,
Texas, to James and Ada Skinner Justice.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Carlsbad for
more than 60 years and spent more than 20 years serving as a
nurse at the local hospital. She was a very loving and
devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton
Frank Birchell in 1982; and a son, Milton Wayne Birchell in
2004.
She is survived by a daughter, Jean Brooks and husband Doug
of Lubbock; a daughter-in-law, Edith Birchell of Carlsbad; a
sister, Ethel Mae Birchell of Carlsbad; three grandchildren,
Kerry Crawford and wife Glenda, Amy Tijerina and husband
Albert and Amy Reid; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Kerry Crawford, Doug Brooks, Albert
Tijerina, Ricky Whiteley, Randy Whiteley and Russell
Whiteley.

BUDWINE, W. J. "BUD"
CARLSBAD - W.J. "Bud" Budwine, 86, of Lake Jackson, Texas,
passed away Thursday, April 14, 2005, in Houston, Texas.
W.J. Budwine was an endowed member of Eddy Masonic Lodge No.
21. He took his degrees in Lake Arthur Lodge No. 35 in
Carlsbad in 1974. He was initiated as an Entered Apprentice
on July 30, 1974; passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on
Oct. 1, 1974; and was raised to the sublime degree of Master
Mason on Nov. 5, 1974. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite
Mason, and a member of Ballut Abyad Shrine and the Eddy
County Shrine.
A Masonic memorial service is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday
at the Masonic Lodge, 513 N. Canyon St.
He was a 51-year lifetime member of Elks Lodge No. 1558 and
a 70-year member of the International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers.
A memorial service was held Thursday, April 21, 2005, at
Stroud Funeral Home in Clute, Texas.
Mr. Budwine is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lela
McCaleb Budwine; daughters, Cookie Hassell of Florida and
Sheryl Budwine of New Mexico; sons, Ronnie Budwine of
Victoria, Texas, Jason Boudreaux of Lubbock, Texas, and
Wayne Budwine of New Mexico; a brother, Aleide Budwine of
Beaumont, Texas; and five grandchildren and many other
loving relatives and friends.

CARLSBAD - Jim Buffington, 79, of Caballo Road, passed away
Friday, April 15, 2005, at his home.
An inurnment of cremains is set for 10 a.m. Monday at
Carlsbad Cemetery, with Pastory Eugene Ray, of Otis Baptist
Church, officiating.
He will not lie in state. Cremation has taken place.

James Robert Buffington was born Oct. 25, 1925, to James H.
and Gertrude Dunn Buffington in Sentinel, Okla., where he
grew up and attended school.
He joined the Army and served his country from April 30,
1946, to April 29, 1949. On March 9, 1948, he married Gladys
May Barnfield in Andrews, Texas. He enjoyed fishing and was
well known for his woodwork. He loved his dogs, Harvey and
Christian, but especially loved his family and spending time
with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Survivors include wife Gladys Buffington, of the family
home; sons, Frank Buffington and wife Kathy, of Carlsbad,
and Bobby Lee Buffington of Chickasha, Okla.; three
grandchildren, Bobby James Buffington, of Carlsbad, Becky
Weems and husband Mark, of Carlsbad, and Jodey Buffington
and wife Angela, of Chickasha; great-grandhildren, Ashley
Buffington, Ryan Weems, Sara Weems and Austin Buffington;
and brother, Bob Buffington and wife Pat, of Valley View,
Texas.

BUSTER, JOE E. SR. (Photo)
LUBBOCK, Texas - On April 7, 2005, Joe Edwin Buster Sr.
passed from this life into the arms of his Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. We greatly miss our loving husband, father,
grandfather, great-grandfather, but we know it will only be
a short while before we will all be together again where
there will be no more tears, pain, sorrow or death.
On April 9, 2005, Joe was laid to rest in Lubbock, Texas, at
Resthaven Memorial Park.
Joe was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Childress, to Howard Vaughan
and Allie Arma (Buchanan) Buster. He lived out his youth and
young adulthood there. He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII,
and belonged to the First Families of Texas Society, being a
descendant of a family who arrived in, and fought for, the
Republic of Texas in 1836.
He married the love of his life, Mavis N. Hammons on Sept.
26, 1948, in Childress. In 1951 they moved to Carlsbad,
where they lived for more than 18 years. Joe was a member of
the First Assembly of God Church in Carlsbad, where he was
the choir director for many years. Joe worked in the potash
mines from 1951 to 1969, before moving to Lubbock. In
Lubbock, Joe worked for Lubbock Power and Light and Texas
Tech University Electrical Department before retiring in
1993.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers,
Howard V. Jr. and James.
Joe is survived by his wife, Mavis of Lubbock; a son, Joe E.
Buster Jr.; daughter, Deborah Turner and husband, David, all
of Lubbock; three grand children, David Turner II, Hallie
Taylor, Priscilla Turner; three great-grandchildren, Kayla,
Kaeden, and Faith, all of Lubbock; and several nieces,
nephews and cousins.

LOVING - Gene Carmichael, 72, of South Fifth Street, Loving,
passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at his residence.
Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial will
take place at a later date.

Gene Carmichael was born May 5, 1932. He retired from PCA
Potash. He was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting,
fishing and trapshooting.
He is survived by his spouse of 53 years, Naida Carmichael;
daughters, Becky Graham and husband Alex of Carlsbad and
Cindy Davis of Durango, Colo.; brothers, Connie Carmichael
of Loving and Joe Carmichael of Arlington, Texas;
grandchildren, Monica Colvin of Las Vegas, Nev., Neal
Christopher of Carlsbad, Ragan Reid of Loving, and Colby
Davis of Phoenix; and great-grandchildren, Sydney, Baylee,
Shaylee, John-Neal and Ryder.

COUSINS, JAMES A. (Dr.) (Photo)
CARLSBAD - Dr. James Alymer Cousins was born Oct. 18, 1930,
in Penticton Hospital. He passed away on March 28, 2005, at
Saanich Peninsula Hospital in Saanichton, B.C.
His early schooling was in Beaverdell, B.C., with junior and
senior high school in Kelowna, B.C. Jim attended UBC,
obtaining his BA in 1953 and his medical degree in 1957. He
interned at Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, B.C.,
and trained in orthopedics at the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville.
Jim practiced at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver from
1963 to 1977, followed by practices in Iowa and Tennessee
until 1983 when he relocated his practice to Carlsbad. He
retired in 1995 and moved to Gabriola Island, B.C.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Isabel
" Dolly" Cousins.
He leaves to mourn his passing, three daughters, Emily and
husband Bill Cheung, Danica and husband Greg McAden and
Maren and husband Blair Becker; son, David; sister, Frances
" Peggy" Cousins; and six grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas,
Alyssa and Mattias Cheung and Zoe and Brooklyn Becker.
No service by request. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the
Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation (Palliative Care),

Mrs. Cox passed away Monday, April 4, 2005, at her
daughter's home in Santa Fe.

Ruth was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Bard, Calif., to Levin and
Eva Jackson. She graduated from Yuma High School and
received her BA in education from Northern Arizona State.
Ruth married Curtis Cox in 1936. She continued her education
and earned her master's from Arizona State University in
Flagstaff. They moved to Carlsbad in 1945, where they raised
their family. Ruth taught first grade at Sunset Elementary
School for 25 years and retired in 1979.
She was a member of the National Education Association and
Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Education Sorority. Ruth was a
charter member of Sunset Church of Christ, where she was
very involved and taught Bible class for many years. She
also enjoyed reading, traveling, and cheering for the San
Antonio Spurs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Cox in
2001; sister, Lorena Eckert; and brothers, Elmer and Robert
Jackson.
She is survived by sons, Stephen P. Cox and wife Alicia of
Houston, Texas; daughters, Laura Ford and husband Walter of
Santa Fe, and Bonnie Buck and husband Doug of Albuquerque;
and six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Bob Wilson, Russell Cox, Curtis David Cox,
Dr. Duane Griffith, Orlando Carriaga and Robert Defer.

Rev. Edward Gonzalez of Crossroads Family Life Church,
Carlsbad, officiating.
Interment will follow at Santa Catarina Cemetery.

Seferino and Graciana Belardes Martinez.
She married Sacarias Doporto on April 28, 1940, at age 16.
She spent her life devoted to her family, friends and
church. Kica was a life long caregiver to many nieces and
nephews and took care of her mother-in-law, who was blind,
until the time of her death at age 99. She asked little of
life, but gave so much, especially in her 65 years with her
husband who was the focus of her existence here on earth.
She loved her church and praised God until He called her
home. Kica was her family's rock, always there giving,
always full of love and understanding.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers,
four sisters and four daughters.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Sacarias Doporto
of the family home; six children, Eva Lopez and husband
David of Carlsbad, Nora Baiza and husband Dan of Roswell,
Ventura Doporto and wife Rosa of Bledsoe, Texas, Andres
Doporto and wife Priscilla of Alamogordo, Elisa Granado and
husband Raymond of Morton, Texas, and Sacarias Doporto Jr.
and wife Margie of Carlsbad; a brother, Mike Martinez and
wife Maria Elena of El Paso, Texas; two half-sisters,
Refugia Martinez and Angelica Martinez of Carlsbad; three

CARLSBAD - Charles H. Dyer III (Chuck) died March 31, 2005,
of liver and kidney failure. The viewing will take place at
10 a.m. Monday immediately followed by the service at Christ
Life Church, Phoenix.
Chuck was born on Nov. 25, 1925, to Charles H. Dyer II and
Jean Bathgate in Los Angeles, Calif. Chuck was a Merchant
Marine in WWII, a welder, a machinist and went on to work
for Arizona Public Service and Palo Verde Nuclear Generating
Station. Later, he became a consultant for nuclear power and
finally selected a position at the Waste Isolation Pilot
Plant in Carlsbad, where he retired in 1997.
Chuck was a workaholic and at any one time, he might have
been found working on his dune buggy, remodeling his home or
helping someone with just about anything. His passion became
painting and he won several awards for his art. To relax, he
enjoyed hunting and fishing on the Pecos River.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Sandy; daughters, Cheryl Dyer
of Sarasota, Fla., Sheena and her husband Ken Martz of Show
Low, Ariz., Lisa Will of Carlsbad, Ginger and her husband
Lee Middleton of Tucson, Ariz., Cathy and her husband Blain
Sherbrooke of Chandler, Ariz., and Angela and her husband
Andrew Hamby of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and 16 grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.

Massey was born Aug. 20, 1913, in Springfield, Mo., the only
child of George Volney and Bessie Lee (Latimer) Fitch. The
family moved to Tulsa, Okla., in 1923. He was educated in
area schools, graduating from Sand Springs High School and
completing one year at Tulsa University before working at
various Depression-era jobs.
In 1936, he married Elizabeth Anne Harrison. The couple,
with infant son John Massey, came to El Paso in 1940 when he
was accepted for the U.S. Border Patrol. Thus began 32 years
of service with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization
Service. Retiring in 1972, Massey and Elizabeth chose
Carlsbad for their leisure years.
Until failing health limited his activities, he was active
in the Par 3 golf group and volunteered at Landsun. He was
an avid reader and book collector, pursued his interests in
archeology, genealogy, weaving and lapidary work. He was a
long time member of First United Methodist Church, SENM
Historical Society, Cactus Club, Retired Border Patrol
Officers and a life member of NARFE. He enjoyed several
years of visiting yard sales with his good friend, Hugh
Martin.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Elizabeth Anne; a
son, John Massey Fitch of Las Cruces; closer than kin in-
laws, Charles L. Harrison of Grass Valley, Calif., Ruth and
Bill Pratt of Tulsa, Okla., and Peggy and Bill Tomas of
Tulsa, Okla.

Karen L. Franco was born Dec. 2, 1964, to Ula and Harold
Groves and passed away April 16, 2005, in an automobile
accident along side her longtime companion and friend Dr.
Majid Syed.
Karen graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1982, going on
to attend the nursing program at New Mexico State University
at Carlsbad, where she obtained her nursing degree in 1987.
Karen then went on to obtain her Critical Care and BACRN
certificate. She worked at Guadalupe Medical Center in the
Intensive Care Unit. She then went on to specialize in
cardiology at the office of Dr. Majid Syed until 1999.
Karen's love of nursing took her to aero medical transport
of critically ill and injured patients. Karen relocated to
Deming in 2004, where she helped to open Dr. Syed's new
Heart Center.
Karen was an adventurous and well-traveled individual who
loved her family, friends, horses and photography. Her
passion for flying was only superceded by her love for her
family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved brother Lloyd
Groves and father Harold Groves. "Fly now sweet Angel on
golden wings."
She is survived by a son, Matthew L. Franco of Deming; two
daughters, Hannah A. Groves and Jennah A. Groves of Deming;
her mother, Ula Dean Groves of Deming; a brother, Steve
Groves of Carlsbad; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces
and close friends who were like family to her.
Pallbearers are Earl Smith, Bobby Sanchez, Robert Sanchez
and Bill Rook.

Pablo Rodriguez Gonzales was born June 26, 1926, in Loving
to Santana and Antonia Rodriguez Gonzales.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 5, 1944, at age
18. He was stationed in Central Europe where he earned the
Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle
Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Combat
Infantry Badge, Honorable Service Lapel and stripes for his
service as a Private First Class. Pablo was honorably
discharged on Nov. 3, 1946. He returned to the Loving area,
where he became employed as the foreman on the Hemler farms.
After his retirement, he worked with home care in Carlsbad
until his illness prevented him from continuing. Pablo
enjoyed keeping his yard and garden and grandchildren and
was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He and his wife, Guadalupe
" Lupe" Martinez had been together for more than 63 years. He
was a member of San Jose Catholic Church.
Pablo was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard
Villapando; and two brothers, Santana Gonzales and Benny
Florez.
He is survived by his wife, Lupe Gonzales of the family
home; sons, Paul Gonzales Jr. and wife Anna, and Adolfo
Hernandez, all of Carlsbad; daughters, Ella Herrera and
husband, Albert, and Nellie Mireles and husband, Ruben, all
of Carlsbad; brothers, Faustino Gonzales of Artesia, and Joe
Florez and Alex Florez, both of Carlsbad; sister, Teresa
Garcia of Lubbock, Texas; and 15 grandchildren, 20 great-

the last several years was self employed working with
various realtors in Carlsbad.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, from riding
their little pocket rockets to coloring Easter eggs - he did
it all. William and Anita loved to watch NASCAR races
together. He was a wonderful person and will be missed
dearly.
Survivors include his wife, Anita, of the family home;
daughter, Stefanie Workman, and sons, Steve and Bobby Ward,
and 10 grandchildren, all of Carlsbad; sisters, Jo Ann
Perry, of Carlsbad, Ruth Edwards, of Hobbs, and Nola Nell

PORTALES- A graveside committal service for Bill Hagar, 78,
of Portales and formerly of Carlsbad, is scheduled for 10

Mr. Hagar died early Friday morning, April 22, 2005, at
Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.

Bill Hagar was born Jan. 18, 1927, to Girard, Texas, to Iona
Bell and Alvin Clifton Hagar.
His family moved to Dora in January 1942. He graduated from
Dora High School in 1944. In April 1945, he entered the Army
and served until November 1946.
Bill returned to Dora and was married to Nola Hofman on Dec.
7, 1947. The couple celebrated 57 years of marriage before
his death. They farmed in Dora for a short time before
moving to Carlsbad in August 1948. In Carlsbad, he worked
for Potash Company of America. Mr. Hagar was a lab
technician there until 1983 when he retired after 35 years.
In August 1999, the couple moved to Portales to make their
home.
He enjoyed playing dominoes, Shoot the Moon and pool. He was
an exceptional Snooker player. Mr. Hagar was a regular to
play dominoes at both the Dora Senior Center and the
Portales Senior Citizens. He was a great sports fan, enjoyed
watching sporting events of all kinds, but especially bull
riding, golf and baseball games. Mr. Hagar was a member of
the First Baptist Church in Portales.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Wesley
Dale Hagar who died Sept. 21, 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Nola, of their home in Portales;
daughter and son-in-law, Nolita K. and Jimmy Crouch of
Carlsbad; grandchildren, Colita and Chelsie Hagar, Chrissi
Montes and husband, Fausto and Coby Crouch; two great-
grandchildren, Fausto Jr. and Johnathan Montes; brother and
sister-in-law, Ron and Joan Hagar of Denver; and nieces and
nephews, Trent and Cassandra Hagar and Alana Hagar.

Josefa Martinez Rodriguez in Otis and was raised in the
Carlsbad area. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, reading
and she loved music, having learned to play the piano at an
early age, dancing and artwork.
She was an unbelievably hard-working woman and most of all
an incredibly impeccable mother and wife. All her family
will truly miss her.
She is survived by her husband, Pedro Hernandez; four sons;
two daughters; four brothers; a sister; 14 grandchildren; 41
great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Theron L. Jay was born Dec. 31, 1914, to Thomas and Edna
Phillips Jay in Austin, Texas. He graduated from high school
in Idalou, Texas, as valedictorian. He attended Texas Tech
on a full scholarship, but was forced to leave after his
freshman year to help support his family.
On July 28, 1935, he married Floy Velma Rogers in Idalou.
The couple moved to Carlsbad, where Theron went to work as a
filling station attendant then went to work as an apprentice
under Mr. Henry Netz, and during the war he worked in the
nitrate plants as a journeyman in the trowel trades. In
1948, he started a partnership with Aubrey Duncan, JD
Construction. He became a partner in Carlsbad Block and
Supply and eventually purchased the entire business.
In 1979, he retired after a very successful career in the
trowel trades, concrete and manufacturing business. From
1935 until his death he was very active in Fox and Lake
Church of Christ, and was on the founding board of Lakeview
Christian Homes of the Southwest serving as chairman for a
term. He loved to travel and spent a spiritual mission in
the Philippines in 1969. He was an avid hunter, loved to
play the guitar and sing. He sang in several gospel groups
including one with his two sisters.
Theron was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Floy.
He is survived by sons, Roger Jay and wife Kitty of
Magnolia, Texas, and Benny Jay and wife Nancy of Austin,
Texas; grandchildren, Gregory Jay and wife Christina of
Katy, Texas, Bradley Jay and wife Rebecca of Arlington,
Texas, Cindy Jay of Austin, Texas, and Debbie Myers and
husband Ryan of Austin, Texas; stepgrandchildren, Bradley
and Laura Merrell and Marcus and Kristi Merrell all of
Austin, Texas; two sisters, Dorothy Cummins of Carlsbad and
Bonnie McDonald of Bakersfield, Calif.; great-grandchildren,
Peyton Jay and wife Cianna of Katy, Texas, Logan Myers of
Austin, Texas, Caleb Myers of Austin, Texas, Merritt Jay of
Arlington, Texas, and David Alexander Merrell of Austin,
Texas.

Lynn Jr., 77, of Ponca City, Okla., will be held at 2 p.m.
Monday at Longwood Cemetery at Ponca City, conducted by

He passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005. John suffered a
massive stroke while walking along the path at Riverside
Park in Carlsbad, where he was living at the time on Nov. 1,
2001, and at the time of death was residing at the Ponca
City Nursing and Rehab Center. Family will greet friends at
the Trout Funeral Home 3-4 p.m. Sunday.
Trout Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will
be no funeral service.
Mr. Lynn was a former Conoco employee.
John R. Lynn Jr. was born March 30, 1929, in Valentine,
Neb., to John R. Sr. and Sylvia Carl Lynn. His father worked
for the Department of Indian Affairs and the family grew up
on Indian reservations in South Dakota, Arizona, New Mexico
and Oklahoma. He graduated from Classen High School in
Norman until his education was interrupted by the draft into
the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed
in Maryland. He then returned to O.U. getting his bachelor's
and master's degrees in chemical engineering in 1954.
On Dec. 5, 1987, he married Helen L. Hollingsworth in
Houston, Texas. He retired from a successful career in
chemical engineering in 1991. In May 1994, they moved to
Carlsbad from Houston and enjoyed the friendly small town
atmosphere. He loved gardening and doing handy-man repairs.
He was known for his dry sense of humor. He enjoyed long
walks, traveling, reading newspapers, collecting Indian
artifacts and solving puzzles.
They moved back to Ponca City in September 2004.
Mr. Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, John R. Lynn
Sr. and Sylvia Lynn; brother, Kent; and a brother-in-law,
Jim Miller.
Survivors include his wife Helen of Ponca City, Okla.; son,
David J. Lynn and wife Jennifer; daughter and son-in-law,
Barbara and Tom Price and daughter Hilda Lynn, all of
Houston, Texas; one sister, Sylvia "Betty" of Oklahoma City;
and six grandchildren. Ponca City relatives include two
nieces, Peggy Mitchell and Mayetta Fowler, nephews, Jerry
and Roger Bakewell and Loyd Bakewell of Twin Falls, Idaho,
and many other nieces and nephews.

Longview, Wash.
In her earlier years, while living in Longview, Inez caught
a 20-pound salmon, which made her very proud. Besides
fishing, she also enjoyed crafts, sewing and playing
dominoes, especially "42" and Inez was always known for her
little "quips."
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Inez is survived by her son Garland Randall Maedgen of
Seattle, Wash.; daughter, Margaret Kirkes and husband Don of
Carlsbad; grandchildren Joel Kirkes and Loren Kirkes and his
wife Marti, all of Carlsbad, Shawna Cowan and husband Mark,
and Nancy Johnson and husband Doug, all of Albuquerque; and
seven great-grandchildren.

Virgie Mildred Crowley May was born in Quail, Texas, on Jan.
11, 1910. She was the seventh of eight children born to John
David and Margaret Ann Elizabeth Overcash Crowley. The
family was sharecroppers until they homesteaded land at
Ocho, N.M., about 1913. Once the land was proved up, they
moved to Otis, where they eventually got their own farm.
Virgie married Wainwright Perry May on June 15, 1939, and
they made their home in Carlsbad. Wain was killed in a
mining accident on April 15, 1943, and on July 15 of that
year, their daughter Mildred Carolyn was born.
Virgie worked at J.C. Penney's and then at Carlsbad National
Bank, where she retired as a cashier in 1975.
On Sept. 6, 1931, Virgie was baptized in the Pecos River at
Otis and was a member of Otis Baptist Church until she moved
to Carlsbad and joined First Baptist on Nov. 22, 1942. She
was a very faithful member and served as the Junior
Department Secretary for many many years. She was the first
treasurer of MAGIC, the senior adult organization of the
church, and kept that position for several years. She
belonged to Llama Chi Omega Sorority for many years, serving
in many of the various offices. She was a member of the
Business and Professional Women.
Virgie was an avid gardener and loved to travel. She was a
role model for many people with a quiet nature and gentle
spirit. She was always doing things for others behind the
scenes without any fanfare.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son,
four brothers, three sisters and four half sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Bright; one sister-
in-law, Julia Crowley; one brother-in-law, Phillip M. May;
and step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-
grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Robert Bailey, Ernest Crowley, Clyde
Englebright, George Masters, Ron Montgomery and Glen Porter.

Irene Miller was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Logan, W.Va., the
daughter of the late Homer and Opal Sparks Langdon.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Alfred Miller.
He was her rock and meant more to her than he knows. Her
five children and their families are Dr. David Solar, wife
Judy and their children Chris, Jennifer and Brandon; Paula
Solar and husband Roger Griffin; retired police officer Kym
Redman, husband Lance and their daughter Airriell;
Elizabeth Miller and children Leslie and Allan; Freddie
Miller and significant other, Amanda Phillips and his son
Justin. There are six great-grandchildren, Angel, Katie,
Kristen, Corban, Myah and Keith.
Irene began a 40-year nursing career by obtaining her LPN
license in 1964 at St. Francis Hospital in Carlsbad. She
went on to get her RN license with her daughter, Paula, in
1978, becoming the first in the family to graduate from
college at age 45. She reluctantly retired at the age of 68.
Irene loved each of her children in her own way and felt
they were her greatest achievement. She had special memories
of each one that she held dear. She loved music, a good cup
of hot tea and her family around her. We have lost a
wonderful, dearly loved wife, mother and friend.

Dionicio M. "Nicho" Muniz was born Nov. 26, 1930, in
Carlsbad, to Guillermo and Rafaela Mendoza Muniz, where he
was raised. On March 1, 1952, he married Lily C. Martinez.
He spent his life doing beautiful stucco work in the
Carlsbad area prior to his retirement. His hobbies included
watching Western movies, painting automobiles and playing
the harmonica. He was an active member of Iglesia de Cristo
for 57 years where he was a song leader. He was a great
husband, father and grandfather who loved and devoted his
life to his family. He will be greatly missed by all his
family and friends.
He was preceded in death by Guillermo Muniz, Rafaela M.
Muniz, Alicia M. Aguayo (daughter), Santiago Muniz
(brother), Rachel M. Palomino (sister), and Aurelia M. Campos (sister).
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lily C. Muniz of the
family home; three daughters, Eva M. Sosa and husband David
of Carlsbad, Goya M. Lara and husband Jimmy of Carlsbad, and
Emma M. Orozco and husband Frank of Carlsbad; brothers, Joe
(Chino) Muniz of Albuquerque, Jack Muniz of Phoenix, Ariz.,
and Elias Muniz of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters, Lilly Carrasco
of Carlsbad, Ethel Torres of Carlsbad, Sylvia Colter of
Carlsbad and Esmera Archuleta of Roswell; and 13
grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-
grandchildren
Pallbearers are Eric J. Campos, Martin Campos Jr., Ivan
Sosa, Destiny Garcia, Ely Lara and Joe John Perez.

LAS CRUCES - James Samuel (Jim) Osborn died April 16, 2005.
A memorial service honoring his life was held April 18 in
Las Cruces.
Jim was born June 3, 1939, in Douglas, Ariz. He worked as a
real estate broker in Carlsbad, Albuquerque and Las Cruces.
He was an active servant in the Church of Christ.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sue; daughter, Cammy and
husband Philip Hall of Round Rock, Texas; daughter-in-law,
Patricia Osborn of Spring, Texas; mother, Lorene Osborn of
Carlsbad; brother, John W. Osborn and his wife Geneva of
Tipton, Okla.; two sisters, Pam Cummings and husband Benny
of Carlsbad and Pat Stamps and husband Gaylon of Panhandle,
Texas. Also surviving are six grandchildren and a host of
family and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, John Osborn, and

DEMING - Concha Parra, 89, passed away Sunday, April 24,
2005, at her residence in Carlsbad.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Baca's Funeral
Chapels. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m., also at Baca's.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Thursday at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Interment will follow
at Mountain View Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held in Carlsbad at a later date.

Concha was born Oct. 4, 1915, in Mexico City to Heriberto
Centeno and Hermerejilda Lopez. She came to Columbus when
she was only 3 and lived there until the age of 7 when she
moved to Deming.
She grew up in Deming, where she was always a devoted member
of St. Ann's Catholic Church. Always a giving and caring
person, Concha always had a lifelong love of family and
friends. Her hobbies included sewing, reading and gardening.
She poured her heart out when it came to cooking for her
family, especially her famous lemon pie and empanadas.
At age 87, Concha left Deming and made Carlsbad her new
home. While in Carlsbad, she became a member of San Jose
Catholic Church. Her never-ending love of God and her church
never stopped showing.
Concha will continue to live through her survivors, her son
Antonio Parra and wife Estela of Deming; two daughters,
Olalla Pacheco of Bellflower, Calif., and Martha Parra
Gonzales of Carlsbad; two sisters, Carmen Gonzalez of Deming
and Esther Fresquez of Albuquerque; along with eight
grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband
Antonio S. "Tito" Parra.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Parra, Jesus Gonzales, Arnold
Gutierrez, Benny Pargas, Maggie Dominguez and Manuel
" Colonel" Torres.

John (Jack) Henderson Perry was born March 10, 1912, in
Roswell to John and Mabel Bailey Perry. He was raised and

preceded him in death on Sept. 13, 2000, after 65 years of
marriage.
John was employed as an electrician with the potash mines
and retired in 1977 at age 65. Until the last few years,
John was a very active member of the First Presbyterian
Church. He was an endowed member of Eddy Lodge No. 21 AF &
AM of Carlsbad. He had been raised to the Sublime Degree of
Master Mason on July 29, 1949. John was a very active
Freemason and was an active member of Signet Chapter No. 9
of the Royal Arch Masons in Carlsbad. He will be sorely
missed by his Brethren.
He is survived by his son, John L. Perry of Carlsbad;
daughter, Carolyn Perry Files of San Diego, Calif.; and four
grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his Masonic Brothers.

Inda Rhea Reddy passed away Friday, April 22, 2005, at her
home surrounded by her family. Inda Rhea was born March 14,
1911, in Atoka, Texas, to Wilson and Ethel Murrill and came
to New Mexico at the age of 9 in a covered wagon. She was
educated in Roosevelt County and attended Las Vegas Normal
College in Las Vegas, N.M.
On Jan. 6, 1931, she married Robert Roy Reddy then
subsequently moved to Eddy County and homesteaded south of
Carlsbad, before moving to town. During the war, she worked
at the Carlsbad Air Base. Later, she was a substitute
teacher and bookkeeper and retired from the Carlsbad
Municipal Schools in 1974.
She traveled with friends after her retirement and was
active in her church and loved caring for her family whom
she loved dearly and was the focal point in her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy;
one grandson, David Reddy; a great-grandson, Nathan Mealey;
and a great-granddaughter, Rachel Reddy.
She is survived by sons, George Reddy and wife Betty of
Roswell and Dan Reddy and wife Barbara of Carlsbad; a
daughter, Robbie Holman and husband Wilson of Santa Fe; a
sister, Mildred Pate of Carlsbad; a brother, Jim Murrill of
Artesia; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and
one special nephew, Dub Murrill.
Pallbearers are Rhonda Weiland, Carla Mealey, Michael
Matthews, Pat Matthews, Paul Reddy, Robert Lore, Robbie

ALAMOGORDO - Longtime Carlsbad resident Clint "Shorty"
Roberts, 90, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2005.
Shorty was born and raised in Texas, but lived in Carlsbad
from 1946 to 1994 and in Alamogordo from 1994 until his
death. Shorty worked for IMC Corp. for 36 years, retiring as
a warehouse foreman in 1982.
Shorty will be remembered by friends and family as a devoted
and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and
husband. He was ever cheerful, unforgettable and never met a
stranger. He was loved and will be missed by one and all.
Shorty was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruth,
and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and

housewife raising their three children until the late 1970s.
In 1982, she received a kidney transplant.
She worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses including
at CARC Inc. until having to retire in 1998 due to her
health. Marilyn was a strong Christian lady who regularly
attended Bible study. She enjoyed playing the piano, sewing
and doing things for and with her grandchildren. Marilyn
touched the heart of so many, giving much and asking so
little in return.
She is survived by sons, Jim Robison Jr. and wife Caryn of
Carlsbad and Mark Robison and wife Nancy of Dothan, Ala.;
daughter, Dawn Duff and husband Ed of Carlsbad; a brother,
Richard Cole and wife Doreen of Covington, La.; a sister,
Judy Smith and husband David of Ontario, Calif.; eight
grandchildren, Michelle, Crystal, Sandra, Robert, Copey,
Lisa, Meagan and Brande; and three great-grandchildren,
Dakota, Ashton and Alora.

52 years of marriage.
He is survived by his son, Larry G. and wife Sue C. Rose of
Albuquerque; his granddaughters, Crystal C. and Amanda J.

He enjoyed working, going to his cabin in Ruidoso and

moved around Texas before settling in New Mexico in 1954,
first in Carlsbad for a year, then Artesia until 1962, when
they moved back to Carlsbad for the duration of their lives.
Jeanie's mission in life was bringing joy and happiness to
everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother,
Cornelius; and husband, George.
She is survived by a son, George M. Shoup Jr. and wife Janis
of Carlsbad; a granddaughter, LeAnne Korbel and husband
Stephen of Montclair, N.J.; a grandson David M. Shoup and
wife Christy of Carlsbad; loving companion, Erie Mae Ingram
of Carlsbad; six great-grandchildren, Kayley Shoup, Sydney
Shoup, Gage Shoup, Britton Korbel, Travis Korbel and Wade

until his 18th birthday in Shabbona, Ill., when he enlisted
in the Navy in 1943.
On May 8, 1948, he married Virginia Phillips in Sycamore,
Ill. He worked as a bricklayer in the construction business
starting as an apprentice and retiring after 30 years as a
mason. He moved to Prescott, Ariz., where he worked for the
water department until he retired in 1992. In 1999, he moved
to Carlsbad, where he enjoyed fixing things and doing
handyman work around the house.
He was preceded in death by his father and stepfather.
Mr. Skinner is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia
Skinner of the family home; five children, Terry Skinner and
wife Marian of Somonauk, Ill., Deanette Lee Carter of
Flagstaff, Ariz., Rita Rae Hanley and husband Joe of
Earlville, Illl., Jerry Skinner and wife Dusty of Kirkland,
Ariz., and Lori Marie Goeke and husband Vince of Carlsbad;
his mother, Agnes Skinner of Shabbona, Ill.; two brothers,
Leslie Skinner and wife Dolly of Union, Ill., and Harold
Skinner and wife Marlene of Earlville, Ill.; a sister,
Martha Samson and husband Don of Plano, Ill.; and 17

will be missed as well as her smile, hospitality and grace.

Maude Gladys Murray Tarter was born Feb. 14, 1906. She was
raised in Health, Ark. She married Johnny Murray in 1925 in
Kellyville, Okla., and he died in 1932.
Maude raised four children and later married Allen Tarter in
1939 in Oklahoma, then moved to Hagerman, N.M., where they
lived for 27 years. Allen died in 1967 and in 1973 Maude
moved to Carlsbad, where she was a member of the Apostolic
Church of Jesus Christ. Maude baby-sat many years for more
than 50 children. She loved taking care of the children and
was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Johnny
Murray in 1932 and Allen Tarter in 1967; sons Olen, Robert
and John Murray; granddaughter, Joy Graves; great-
granddaughter, Jennifer Little; 12 brothers and sisters; and
son-in-law, John Little.
She is survived by a daughter, Alma Ruth Little of Carlsbad;
a daughter-in-law, Shirley Murray; two grandsons, Patrick
Murray and Glenn Little; a granddaughter, Ruth Ann Shores;
12 great-grandchildren, Lori Finney, Ladd Graves, Loni Tolk,
Jeremy Little, Stephanie Little, Logan Shores, Brad Murray,

She was a caring person and made regular donations to the
CARC Farm. She also loved animals and made regular donations
to the Cat's Meow. Doris was a homemaker, wife and mother.
Her first husband, Earl E. Carlson, preceded her in death in
1970 and her second husband, James E. Tompson, preceded her
in death in 1992. Her only daughter, Cynthia Young, preceded
her on Feb. 23, 2002.
Doris had been baptized in the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include her only son, Tim Carlson, of Atlanta,
Ga.; two stepsons, Tim Tompson, of Rock Springs, Wyo., and
Terry Tompson, of Alexander, Va.; and one granddaughter,
Jessica Leigh McIlwain, of Fort Worth, Texas.

was a certified firefighter and EMT as well as an EMT
trainer for more than 20 years. He loved to play the
trumpet. Moises was a committed firefighter and was very
dedicated to protecting his community from fire danger. He
graduated from an Explosive Sabotage Devise course from the
Department of the Army at Ft. Bliss and was certified.
He is survived by his children, Moises Martin Urquidez III,
Kathleen Urquidez Munoz, Michael Urquidez, Richard Saunders,
Anthony Rocha, Xavier Urquidez, Timothy Urquidez and Matthew
Urquidez; brothers, Edward Urquidez of Las Cruces and Barry

He and his wife, Audrey Faye Henry, whom he married on April
3, 1960, at Happy Valley Baptist Church in Carlsbad, would
deliver watermelons and cantaloupes by the truckload to
different stores around town. Buck was an accomplished water
witcher having missed only one water well in his lifetime.
He was a member of the Farm Bureau for more than 55 years
and had been a member of the board of directors. He was also
a faithful member of Happy Valley Baptist Church.
Buck was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and
one sister.
He is survived by his wife of the family home; his sister,
Frances Harris of Carlsbad; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Noley Burton, Ken Evans, Charles McGinnis,
Mark Christesson, Terry Macarthur and Bob Henderson.

ARTESIA -- The state Office of the Medical Investigators has
ruled the death of an Artesia man accidental, based on
preliminary autopsy findings.
James Neal Wallace, 42, was found dead inside a smoke-filled
overhead camper on his property by his friends on April 7,
according to a release from the Eddy County Sheriff's
Department.
Inside the camper was a metal bucket containing smoldering
coals.
The cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning, according
to the release.
The complete autopsy report is pending and will contain
toxicology findings,the release states.

Jack Howard White Jr. was born Sept. 26, 1940, in Roswell to
Jack H. Sr. and Frankie Miley White. He graduated from NMMI

Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1962 and served in Korea
on the DMZ and in Fort Lee, Va., as a general's aide,
receiving his honorable discharge in 1965.
He was president of White's City Inc., where he had worked
since 1966. He was past president of Carlsbad Jaycees, New
Mexico Jaycees, Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, N.M. Lodging
Association, Tourism Association of N.M. and charter
president of Cavern City Rotary.
Jack served on the Board of Economic Development and Tourism
under governors Tony Anaya and Bruce King. He also served on
the Board of Carlsbad DOD.
Jack served more than 20 years on the following boards:
Region 3 Tourism Board, Eddy County Lodgers Tax Boards and
the Bank Board for both United New Mexico and the American
Bank.
Jack Jr. was named "Mr. Tourism" by New Mexico Hotel Motel
Association in 1985, Inn Keeper of the Year in 1985; Charter
inductee into the N.M. Tourism Hall of Fame in 1997; and
awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award for Tourism by
the Tour Association of N.M. in 2002.
He was a member and past master of Eddy Lodge No. 21 and
Lake Arthur Lodge No. 35 AF/AM; 32 degree Scottish Rite
Mason; member of the Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple; Royal Order
of Jesters Court 16; and York Rite Mason.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack H. White Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Bev, of the family
home; son, Trey White and wife Sandra of White's City;
daughter, Jill Cox and husband, Jeffrey, of Gilbert, Ariz.;
grandchildren, Rob and Trent White of White's City, and

Joseph Allen Williams was born Sept. 5, 1911, in Cedar
Creek, Mo., and the family moved to Rule, Texas, where he
was raised and attended school. Joe worked in the cotton
mills and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and
worked in Sweetwater, Texas, Colorado and Rattlesnake
Springs.
He met and married Mildred Spencer in 1941 and they moved to
El Paso, where he worked at the copper refinery. Joe then
enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the North and South
Pacific during World War II. He attended watch and clock
makers' school in Denver in 1946 and 1947, where he
graduated as a certified master watch and clock maker. He
moved to Carlsbad in 1947, where he began work at McCoy's
Jewelry Store. He became self employed and worked out of his
home repairing clocks and watches for the local jewelry
stores until retiring in 1999.
Joe enjoyed reading the Bible and spending time with his
family. He was a member of the Watch Makers Association,
American Watch Maker Institute, and American Horological
Society.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Williams.
Mr. Williams is survived by daughters, Barbara Ruth Early
and husband Don of Carlsbad and Sheran Ann Sims of Carlsbad;
three grandchildren, Bobby Joe Sims and wife Jenise of
Mayhill, Christy Ann Box and husband Radell of Loving and

Chihuahua, Mexico, to Desiderio and Carmen Aguirre Lopez

Emma Estrada Yanez and farmed in the Otis area for more than
35 years. Jacobo retired after Emma died in 1989, and he
continued to raise their children. His children were his
life. He had an undying sense of humor and always made
others laugh.

Sulemmo Yanez, two brothers and four sisters.

Yanez, Abel Martinez, Roy Estrada, Albert Estrada and
Gustavo Franco. Honorary pallbearers will be Pablo Estrada
and Henry Estrada.

CARLSBAD - A funeral for Jacobo Aguirre "Jack" Yanez, 75, of
Howard Road, is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at San Jose
Catholic Church with Father Valentine Jankowski officiating.
Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery.
Mr. Yanez passed away Sunday, April 24, 2005, at his home.
Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
Jacobo Aguirre "Jack" Yanez was born March 30, 1930, in
Chihuahua, Mexico, to Desiderio and Carmen Aguirre Lopez
Yanez and immigrated to the U.S. at a young age.
He married Emma Estrada Yanez and farmed in the Otis area
for more than 35 years. Jacobo retired after Emma died in
1989 and continued to raise their children. His children
were his life. He had an undying sense of humor and always
made others laugh.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Emma;
daughter, Sulemma Yanez; and two brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by seven children, Jacobo Yanez Jr. of
Carlsbad, Dino Yanez of Elko, Nev., Carmen Yanez of Simi
Valley, Calif., Yolanda Yanez of Oxnard, Calif., Sylvia
Sanchez of Oxnard, Calif., Desiderio Yanez of Carlsbad, and
Adrianna Ituarte of Midland, Texas; two sisters, Celia
Robles Yanez and Esperanza Yanez of Mexico; and 16
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren
Pallbearers are Jacobo Yanez, Jr., Desiderio "Desi" Yanez,
Abel Martinez, Roy Estrada, Albert Estrada and Gustavo
Franco. Honorary pallbearers are Pablo Estrada and Henry
