for HARRY J. KARAS, 83. Interment will bollow at Sunset Gardens
Memorial Park. He died March 3 at his home. Denton-Funchess
is in charge of arrangements. He was born July 2, 1916, to
John Frank and Rose Rice Karas in Hartshorne, Okla., where he
was raised and graduated from high school. He lived in Chicago
and Ohio. He served in the US Army Engineer Corps during
WWII. He came to Carlsbad in 1953. In 1976, he married Opal
Royall. He was a life member of DAV Chapter 30 in Carlsbad. He
was a Catholic. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter
Karas, and a stepdaughter, LaVane Albritton. Survivors include
his wife; sons, Ted Karas of Carlsbad and Ronnie Karas of
Fort Worth, TX; stepson, Elvin Royall of Petaluma, Calif.; daughter,
Karen Spoczynski of Chicago, Texas; stepdaughter, Marsha
Shackelford of Gorman, TX; sister, Laura Anderson of Oklahoma City;

Graveside services for C.W. "Bill" Keith Jr., 93, will be April 5

November 28, 1906, to Charles W. Sr. and Betty Mae Hudson Keith in
Marietta, OK. He married Colleen Terry in McAlester, OK, on
January 21, 1927. They moved to Carlsbad in 1949 from Amarillo, TX.
He was a Past Exalted Ruler with the Amarillo Elks Lodge #923, and
a member of the Eddy Lodge AF and AM, and First United Methodist
Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers; a granddaughter;
and his wife in 1999. He is survived by daughters, Carol Savacool of
Carlsbad, and Billie Kenney of Lubbock, TX; two brothers, Lonnie
and Jack Keith, both of Amarillo; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-

in Artesia, for JEWELL KELLY of Odessa, Texas. Kelly, 92,
died January 24 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Burial
will follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Park with Eastern Star Graveside
Rites. Whe was born March 20, 1907, near Weed, NM. She married
Nathan T. Kelly Jr. on March 25, 1929, in Artesia. He preceded
her in death in 1977. She was a member of First Christian Church
for over 70 years and was an active member of Eastern Star until
1998. Survivors include son Stephen Kelly of Lake Jackson, Texas;
daughters Barbara Walker of Albuquerque, NM, and Norma Jean Sanders
of Odessa; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Nate
in 1977, granddaughter Cinda in 1992; and a great-great-granddaughter
Sabra in 1999.

Rites for W.W. (TED) KENNEDY. Kennedy, 93, died April 1 at his
home. He was born October 24, 1906, in Dennison, TX, the son of
John Robertson Kennedy and Aline Elizabeth (Rumbly) Kennedy. He
married Helen Cornwell on May 12, 1931 in Carlsbad, NM. He moved
to Artesia in 1945 from West Texas. He was initiated into the
Scottish Rite of Freemasonry August 8, 1929. Survivors include
his wife of the home; sons, Robert Eugene Kennedy and wife Vickie
of Las Vegas, Nev., Lary C. Kennedy and wife Pat of Artesia; and
Kent Kennedy and wife Faith of Odessa, TX; brother Gordon Kennedy
of California; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents; a son Charles Ray Kennedy in 1992; and brothers, John R.,
Donald, and Clark.

in charge of arrangements. She was born July 17, 1935, in
Carlsbad to John T. and Delaney Fuson Grady Sr. She had been a
member of Order of Eastern Star, Assembly of God Church and was
a school bus driver in Mountainair. Survivors include daughters,
Susan Brazil and Kathy Anglin of Mountainair, Regina Anglin of
Cuchillo, Lois Casey of Carlsbad, and Boyd Mims of Sumter, S.C.;
brothers, Kenneth Grady of Alamorgordo and John Grady of Calif.;

He was born on January 1, 1930, in Brady, Texas, to Jim and Mayme
Stapleton Knight. He was raised and educated in Odessa for most
of his childhood. He married Allie McGuire on August 3, 1949, in
Odessa, Texas. He was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1952 and
served two years in Korea. He was a member of the VFW No. 8703 in
Carlsbad. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Cree.
Survivors include his wife, Allie Knight of the family home; son,
Perry Knight of Green River, Wyo.; daughters, Audrey Knight of
San Angelo, Texas, and Carol Knight of Carlsbad; sister, Shirley
Jester of Waller, Texas; half-sisters, Helen Reid and Betty Johnson
of Brownwood, Texas; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Lewis died January 18 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical
Center in Albuquerque, NM. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements. He was born June 25, 1949, to August Charles
and Betty E. Fiddes Lewis in Cleveland. He grew up in the Cleveland
area. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam conflict. He had
moved to Albuquerque in the early 1980's where he worked at Kirtland
Air Force Base. He married Darla Taylor on November 28, 1985 in
Albuquerque. They moved to Carlsbad about 12 years ago. He was
a member of the DAV. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Darla Lewis of Carlsbad; sons, Doug A.
Lewis, Jr. of Cleveland, Steve Herbel of Carlsbad and Stacy Halley of
Missoula, Mont.; daughters, Lisa Lewis of Cleveland and Dawn Mason

She was born on April 18, 1921, in Checatoh, OK, to Henry E. and
Maggie Gholston. Her family traveled extensively during the Depression
years and settled in Aspermont. She married William Howard Fitzgerald
in 1941. He preceded her in death in 1970. She had lived in Kermit, TX
for about eight years before moving to Carlsbad in 1975. In 1986, she
married C.W. Lewis, and he preceded her in death in 1993. She was of
the Baptist faith. In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded
in death by a sister and a brother. Survivors include sons, Ollie
Fitzgerald of Carlsbad and Jean Lewis of Pittsburgh; daughters, Shirley
Terrill of Rougue River, OR, and Elaine Phillips of Austin, TX; and

in the area most of her life. She married James David "Dee" Lewis
on August 2, 1940, in Alamogordo, NM. They ranched at Panama Ranch
from 1960 to 1980. In 1980 they moved to Hope, NM and then to
Carlsbad in 1998. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded
in death by five brothers, three sisters and her husband on

July 14, 1946. In 1948, he moved his family to Carlsbad. He was
preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Kattie "Kay" Marie Madry of the home; a son,
Dr. Mike Madry and wife, Nancy, of Carlsbad; daughter, Shirley Kirkwood

of arrangements. He was born November 24, 1935, in Robstown, TX,
to Lewis and Zelva Sifford Manlove. In 1942, his family came to
Carlsbad. He joined the Air Force in 1953 serving with the Air
Force as a 2nd Engineer until his discharge May 1, 1956. At that
time, he moved to Louisiana. He then returned three years later to
Carlsbad. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Survivors include three daughters, Lynda Manlove of Carlsbad, Laura
Kay Stevenson of Artesia, NM, and Lisa Manlove of Santa Fe, NM;
and five grandchildren.

MARTIN, MONA ALZUGARY
Funeral services are scheduled for Mona Alzugary Martin, 85, on

at Carlsbad Cemetery. She died January 15 at Carlsbad Medical

She was born August 31, 1914, to Thomas and Bonnie Norfleet at
Running Water Draw near Olton, Texas. As a young child, the family
moved to Silver, Texas, and then to Lovington, NM, where she
graduated from high school in 1931. Soon after graduation, she
married Marion Alzugary in Carlsbad on October 2, 1931. The couple
ranched on the Graham Ranch near Hobbs in Lea County. They moved
to Carlsbad in the early 1940's. Marion was a successful rancher
until his death in 1967. In September 1969, she married Earl
Martin. He preceded her in death on February 6, 1995. In addition
to her husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, J.T. and
Herman Norfleet. She is survived by a brother, Ned Norfleet of

MARTIN, THOMAS L.
A memorial service is scheduled for Thomas L. Martin, 79, on
January 8, at Epworth United Methodist Church. He died on
January 5 at his home. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements. He was born October 22, 1920, in Carlsbad to
Thomas B. and Delia Calvani Martin. He attended St. Edwards
Catholic School and Carlsbad High School. He joined the Navy in
1942 where he attended the Point Loma Radar School. He received
advanced training in Little Creek, Va. He was assigned to a
destroyer escort serving 2 1/2 years and in five major invasions.
His ship was part of the lead destroyer group, which entered

Asiatic Pacific Area, which included the Hawaiian Islands, Volcano
Islands and Iwo Jima. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart.
He was honorably discharged on November 14, 1945. He married Juanice
Morrow on January 4, 1954, in Carlsbad. Survivors include his wife

School in Anthony, NM, in 1929. In 1931, his father, James G. Moutray,
and brother, Jim B. Moutray, joined in partnership with Hugh to
create J.G. Moutray and Sons at Seven Rivers, NM. He married
Willo Dean Heston in Carlsbad, June 18, 1937. His father passed
away in 1939 after which he and Jim B. formed Moutray Brothers Inc.
He and his family made significant investments in this area including
an expansion of their operations into ranching and crop dusting. In
1954, they took their crop dusters to Managua, Nicaragua. Hugh was
later honored by being appointed Vice Counsel to Nicaragua. In 1948,
he and his friends chartered the People's State Bank of Artesia,
later becoming Western Bank. In a seperated venture in 1974, he
joined Bank Securities Inc., a bank holding company which later
became United New Mexico, which in turn, sold to Norwest in 1994.
His brother retired in 1971 and Hugh retired in 1978. He was a
member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in
death by his parents, brother Jim B., in 1982, and two sisters,
Mrs. Hope Mashaw and Mrs. B.C. Graham. Survivors include his wife,
Willo Dean Moutray, of Carlsbad; son, H. Gil Moutray and wife, Vicki,
of Carlsbad; daughters, Dona Kippenberger of Thomas, OK, and
Barbara Rickert of Dallas, TX; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-

MUNOZ, GERONIMO RODRIGUEZ
Services for Geronimo Rodriguez Munoz, 85, will be August 25 at
Apostolic Assembly Church. Interment will follow at Santa Catarina
Cemetery. He died August 22, at his home. Denton-Funchess Funeral
Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born September 30, 1914,
in Sierra Blanco, TX, to Donasiano Munoz and Rosa Rodriguez Munoz.
He was raised in mexico. He married Elisa Arras in 1938. They moved
to Carlsbad in the early 1960's. He was preceded in death by a son,
Emilio Munoz, and daughter, Guadalupe Granados. Survivors include
his wife; sons, Severiano Munoz, of Hagerman, NM, and Demetrio, Valente,
and Felix Munoz of Carlsbad; daughters, Eva Dominguez, of Otis, NM,
Gloria Pina of Carlsbad and Jovita Camancho of Houston, TX; and 36
grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren. (Photo shown)

MURDOCK, KATHLEEN
Services are March 30 at First Christian Church, for Kathleen Murdock,
77, of Artesia. She died March 28 at Artesia Good Samaritan. Burial
will be at Woodbine Cemetery. She was born October 5, 1922, in
Young Co., TX, the daughter of Lamar Holderman and Laura (Jones)
Holderman. She married James S. Murdock on November 27, 1987, in
Artesia. She came to Artesia in 1948 from Wichita Falls, TX. Survivors
include her husband of the home; daughter Kay Grubbs Northam and
husband Fred of Bay City, TX; stepsons, Allen Murdock and wife Naomi
of Artesia, and Michael Murdock and wife Helen of Fort Worth, TX;
daughter-in-law Carolyn Grubbs of Artesia; sisters, Dutch Duncan of
Sacramento, CA, and Peggy Andrews of Olney, TX; six grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
parents and a son, Wayne Grubbs.
