Wade, 70, died March 22 in Henryetta, OK. He was born
February 26, 1930, in Sugar Leaf Mountain, OK, the son of Barto
Wade and Velma (Kellogg) Wade. He married Dorothy Janet Summers
on July 11, 1950, in Van Buren, Arkansas. They moved to Artesia
from Loco Hills, NM in 1952. She preceded him in death on
August 13, 1994. Survivors include mother Velma Wade of
Henryetta; daughters Vicky Angel and husband Roy Jiminez of
Carlsbad, NM, and Jan Wade-Wilde and husband Larry of Weed, NM;
brother Ronald Wade and wife Betty of Sapulpa, OK; sister Billie
Davis and husband Ray of Henryetta; three grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter
Trudy Lynn Wade in 1973.

Portales, NM, the son of Raymond Walden and Betty Orendorff Walden.
He was preceded in death by his father and a granddaughter,
V.J. Walden. He is survived by his wife, Polly Stanton Walden of
Glenwood; children Mary Kay Walden of Norman, Ark., James R. Walden
of Norman, Ark., James R. Walden of Des Arc, Ark., Chet Walden of

WARD, BERNICE A.
Graveside services for Bernice A. Ward, 91, of Odessa, TX, will be
August 25 at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park in Carlsbad. She died
August 22 at Odessa Medical Center in Odessa, TX. West Funeral Home
is in charge of arrangements. She was known to her friends as "Stevie".
She was born January 13, 1909, in Rockwell City, Iowa, to Mr. and Mrs.
Stevens. She was raised and educated in Rockwell. After graduation
from High School, she moved to Freeport, TX, and attended nursing school.
She married Jesse Franklin Ward on September 22, 1934, in Freeport.
They made their home in Freeport until 1954 when they moved to Carlsbad.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband on March 13, 1989. She moved to Odessa in
September 1994 to live with her daughter, Alma. She was also preceded
in death by a son, Gerald Franklin Ward, and a sister, Irene. Survivors
include daughters, Alma Hammond of Odessa, and Mayrene Roberson of
Zephyr, TX; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

El Paso for 10 years. He served with the Marine Corps during

WESTON, LARRY E.
A memorial service will be today in Coos Bay, Oregon, for
Larry E. Weston, 63, formerly of Carlsbad. He died March 10 at
his home. Coos Bay Chapel is in charge of arrangements. He was
born January 7, 1937, to Cecil Frederick and Anne Mary Morff Weston
in International Falls, Minnesota. He married Deanna Margaret
Allen Weston on June 24, 1956, in Carlsbad. They had no children
but because of his mother's death, the couple raised several of
Weston's younger brothers. The couple also later cared for two
nephews, Jerry Jr. and Forrest Weston. He served in the Army
Infantry from 1960 to 1962 in Germany. He moved to Coos Bay in 1963.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Weston of Florida;
and a sister, Belva Jean Wagner of North Bend, Oregon. He is
survived by his wife of the family home; sisters, Zelda Smith
of Coos Bay, and Margaret Patton of Brookings; and brothers,
Jerry and Mryon "Butch" Weston, both of Coos Bay.

WHEELER, CLARA
Services for Clara Wheeler, 97, will be today at Denton-Funchess Funeral

arrangements. She was born October 2, 1902, in Hempstead, TX, to
Francis M. and Emma Parker Collins. The family moved to Austin, TX,
when she was 9. She married Silvo "S.O." Wheeler Sr. on January 9, 1919.
The couple lived in Austin until moving to Carlsbad in 1935. She later
lived in Dallas, Hurst, and Liberty Hill, Texas, before returning to
Carlsbad. She was preceded in death by a son, Silvo Wheeler, and two
daughters, Emma Keach and Lois Spencer. She is survived by seven grand-
sons, Raymond Spencer and wife, Carolyn, of Wichita Falls, TX, David
Spencer and his wife, Mary, of Carlsbad, George Spencer and his wife,
Pam, of Liberty Hill, TX, Floyd Spencer and his wife, Debbie, of
Albuquerque, NM, Jerry Keach and his wife, Lucille, of Hurst, TX, and
Terry Keach and wife, Louise, of Big Sandy, TX, and John Keach, address
unknown; two granddaughters, Catherine DuPont and husband, Walt, of
Missouri, and Raylene Spencer Murrill and husband, Dub, of Carlsbad;
23 great-grandchildren; and 29 great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers

Cemetery in Artesia, for former Artesia resident Faye Grimlan
Wilcox of Melrose, NM. Wilcox, 80, died on January 23 at
Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM. She was born on
August 11, 1919, in Crowell, Texas, to William Yearl Grimlan
and Ellen C. (Gray) Grimlan. She married Curtis A. Wilcox on
October 6, 1973, in Bellflower, California. He preceded her in
death on September 20, 1991. She came to Artesia in 1932 from
northern New Mexico and moved to California in 1959. She moved
to Melrose 25 years ago. She was a Methodist. She is survived
by sisters Lorene Smith of Amarillo, Texas, Mattie Crenshaw of
Melrose and Jo Conner of Artesia; sister-in-law Ceigal Grimlan
of Artesia; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Connie
Conner, Perry Conner, LaVerne Gressett and Jean Ingram, all of
Artesia. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers
and three sisters.

Lovington, NM, for John T. Wilson, 77. Burial followed at

arrangements. He died March 16 at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, TX.
He was born February 4, 1923, at Cotero, Arizona. He married
Marjorie Abercrombie on August 4, 1946, in Tucumcari, NM. They
came to Lovington in 1949. He was a member of Jackson Avenue Baptist
Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served in the infantry in the
96th Division of the US Army from October 12, 1942, until
February 7, 1946. He was a corporal in the military police and
was stationed at Leyte, Okinawa, with combat duty at the liberation
of the South Philippines. He was awarded the bronze arrowhead,
American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater, and the Philippine
Liberation Victory Medal. Survivors include his wife; son Dr. John
Wilson and wife Barbara of Ada, Okla; and daughters and their
husbands Joyce and Robert White of Albuquerque, NM, Nancy and John
Yates Jr. of Artesia, Margie and Robert Manthei of Andrews, TX;
brother Charley Wilson of Roswell, NM; and a brother-in-law
Howard Abercrombie of Tucumcari. He is also survived by 11 grand-
children, including John Ashby Yates III (Trey) of Artesia.

Charles Elmer and Myrtle Maude Forbes Wood. He married Evelyne
Delores Rineley in February 1930. They moved to Roswell in 1941
with their children. His wife preceded him in death in 1971. He
married Mabel Elizabeth Steuert Smith in July 1973 in Colororado
Springs, CO. She preceded him in death August 8, 2000. He was a
member of the local Carpenter's Union, the Knights of Pythias and
was a member of the Aldersgate Methodist Church. Survivors include
sons, Charles R. Wood of Colorado Springs, and James "Jim" L. Wood
of Vancouver, WA; daughters, Joleen J. McCormick of Carlsbad and
Karen K. Kaul of Orlando, FL; stepsons, Donald, Ronald and Charles

Lovington, NM. Survivors include daughter Wynell "Nell" Baker and
husband Max of Artesia; son Roy Woodard and wife Peggy of Clovis, NM;

University, at Canyon, Texas. She received her teacher's certificate
in Colorado. She married Evan Jones Yearout. They moved to
California for a year and then to Maryville, in east Tennessee, for
two years, where their first child was born. They moved to
Floyd County, Texas, and farmed. After selling the farm they
moved to Carlsbad in 1943. She had been a member of First United
Methodist Church since 1946. She was preceded in death by her
parents, three brothers, three sisters, and her husband on
November 1, 1965. Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Schiller
of Tucson, Ariz.; sister, Lydia Jones of Clovis, NM; three grand-
children, James Schiller Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla., Carol Ann
Schiller of Tucson, and Patricia Cohen of Missoula, Mont.; and
three great-grandchildren, Lana Cohen, Tanya Cohen and James

YORK, LONNIE
Graveside services will be March 18 at Carlsbad Cemetery for
Lonnie York, 74. Honors will be by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor
Guard. He died March 15 at his home. Denton-Funchess Funeral
Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born December 23, 1925,
in Rule, TX, to Jayson W. and Nevada Shields York. He grew up in
Haskell County, TX. He moved to Carlsbad as a young man. During
WWII he served in the Marine Corps in the Iwo Jima and Guam campaigns
and received a Purple Heart for his experience. After the war, he
returned to Carlsbad. He married Jackie Lueb on April 17, 1948.
She preceded him in death on December 12, 1985. He was a lifetime
member of BPOE No. 1558 and a member of the VFW. Survivors include
sons, Danny York and Ronnie York of Carlsbad; brothers, Cliff York
of Carlsbad and Bobby York of Port Arthur, TX; sisters, Juanita West
and Zada Hutzell of Carlsbad; and two grandchildren. (Photo shown
