ACOSTA, DONASIANO
Services were October 19 at Our Lady Of Grace Catholic Church
for Donasiano Acosta of 706 W. James. Acosta, 84, died on
October 16 at his home. Interment was at Twin Oaks Memorial
Park in Artesia. Acosta was born on May 25, 1915, in
Ruidosa, Tex., to Nicasillo Acosta and Jesus (Dominguez) Acosta.
He married Martha Urias on June 15, 1935, in Barrancos de
Guadalupe, Mexico. She preceded him in death on February 4, 1981.
He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. He is
survived by sons Candelario Acosta of Hobbs, NM, and Rosalia
Acosta, Domingo Acosta, Merejildo Acosta and Jose Acosta, all
of Artesia; daughters Manuela Marquez and Santos Yrigollen, both
of Artesia; brother Matillas Acosta of Hobbs; 28 grandchildren;
60 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was
preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

37 Chimeso Road. Aguilar, 18, died on October 13 in
Lubbock, Texas. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
Aguilar was born on November 15, 1980, in Artesia to Robert
Aguilar and Elidia (Gabaldon) Aguilar. He was never married.
He was a member of Our Lady Of Grace Catholic Church. He is
survived by his parents, Robert and Elidia, of the family home;
brothers Rene Aguilar of Albuquerque, NM, and Fabian Aguilar,
wife Gracie, of Artesia; and grandparents Robert Aguilar Sr. and
Esther of Artesia, and Andres Gabaldon of Artesia.

Cemetery for former resident Elsie Rachel Palmateer Allen of
Weatherford, Texas. Allen, 93, died on November 4, in
Weatherford. She was born on December 12, 1905, in
Creston, Nebraska. She and her husband, Henry Crowel Allen,
met in Artesia. He preceded her in death in 1978. She was
a member of First Methodist Church in Artesia. She is survived
by sons William Henry Allen of Weatherford, Jay Palmer Allen
of Glandale, Ariz., and Howard Kim Allen of Vestavia Hills,
Alabama; sister Twyla Belle Stout of Taft, Calif.; six grand-
children; and eight great-grandchildren.

September 3, 1943, in Las Cruces, NM to Marcelino Almager and
Taniz Villareal. He married Illa Mae Scott on July 27, 1989,
in Hobbs. Survivors include his wife Illa Mae Almager of Hobbs;
mother Taniz Villarreal of Artesia; sons Richard Almager and wife
Shelley, Tim Almager, Jr. and wife Irene, all of Roswell, NM,
and Steve Almager and wife Mikea, of Eunice, NM; daughters Sandra
Matta and husband Oscar, and Silvia Hernandez and husband Henry,
all of Roswell, NM; stepsons Norman Johnson and wife Linda, of
Hobbs, Terry Johnson and wife Elaine of Winters, TX, and Chris

Canton, Ohio, for Ora Dugan Antenucci of 709 W. Hermosa.
Antenucci, 75, died on December 17 at her home. Interment will
be in Calvary Cemetery in Massillon, Ohio. She was born on
January 6, 1924, in Witch Hazel, Ohio, to Andrew Stanton Dugan
and Myrtle E. (Millhorn) Dugan. She married Robert Anthony
Antenucci on February 26, 1942, in Canton. He preceded her in
death on November 22, 1997. She was a Catholic. She is survived
by her son, Robert "Bob" Antenucci, wife Linda, of Laguna Niguel,
Calif.; daughters Roberta "Angie" Klatt, husband, Hand, of
Salinas, Calif., and Anita Kuperus and Martha "Martie" Cramer,
both of Artesia; sisters Mildred P. Kelley and Clara Schuller,
both of Martin's Ferry, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-

on January 4, 1930, in Estancia, NM. He preceded her in death
on September 9, 1979. Survivors include sons Earl C. Bean of
Houston, TX and Albert F. Bean of Kansas City, MO; sister Ruth

Funeral services were this afternoon at First Baptist Church
in Carlsbad for Ada Alline Bell of Carlsbad. Burial was to
follow at Carlsbad Cemetery. Bell, 99, died on August 28 at
Carlsbad Medical Center. Bell was born on July 4, 1900, in
Paducah, Kentucky, to William Sidney and Betty Elvira Goodwin
French. Her family moved to Hope when she was 9. She married
Oliver M. Scoggin in 1917 in El Paso, Texas.

BETANCOURT, MARJORIE B.
Immediate burial is December 18, at Twin Oaks Memorial Park
for Marjorie B. Betancourt of Carlsbad, NM. She died on
December 15 in Lubbock, Texas. She was born on October 9, 1918,
in North Bennington, Vt., to John Louis Hurley and Mary Ellen
(Haynes) Hurley. She was married to Albert J. Betancourt on
August 5, 1940, in Seekonk, Mass. He preceded her in death on
June 10, 1990. She was a membe of St. Paul's Episcopal Church
in Artesia. She is survived by a son, Robert Betancourt of
Carlsbad; brother Franklin Bowdoin of Peoria, Ariz.; two
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were Monday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman,
Texas, for former Artesia resident Ruby May Biehl of Brownwood,
Texas. Biehl, 86, died on August 21 at Oak Manor in Brownwood.
She was a longtime resident of Burkett, Texas. Interment was at
Burkett Cemetery. Biehl was born on May 31, 1913, in Elbert,
Texas, to D.B. Bludworth and Eva Strickland Bludworth. She married
Elmer C. Biehl in Coleman, Texas, on July 5, 1935. He preceded
her in death in 1972. They lived in Artesia from 1955 to 1960.

September 4, at Faxon, Oklahoma. Bishop was born on April
20, 1933, in Duncan, Oklahoma, to Thomas Eli Bishop. Bishop
served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Survivors

Curbo of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Judy Jernigan of

Olive Cemetery in Healdton, OK, for Ernest Bray of Healdton.
Bray, 63, died September 28 in the Healdton Hospital after an
extended illness. He was born February 20, 1936, in Healdton to
Freeman and Catherine Reeves Bray. He moved to California in 1957,
then to Artesia in 1958, where he was a charter member of the
Artesia Moose Lodge. He moved back to Healdton in 1973, where he
owned and operated his own business. He married Juanita Corbett in
Healdton on February 14, 1954. She preceded him in death on
April 15, 1973. He married Pearlene Volkman Chapman in Amarillo, TX,
on July 17, 1973. Survivors include his wife, Pearlene, of the
home; sons Bob Chapman of Garland, TX, and Dennis Bray of Wilson, OK;
daughters Robin Ezell of Bridgeport, TX, Judy Ratliff of Wilson,
Tanya Cunningham of Ringling, OK, and Danita Jo Wear of Ruidoso, NM;
father Freeman Bray of Healdton; brothers Richard Bray of Healdton,

death in 1991. Brown served in the US Air Force, retiring in 1983.
He was at the Bataan Death March during WWII and worked as a
slave in the salt mines in Japan. He is survived by his sister,

Earl Brown of Clyde, Texas.

Artesia in 1959 from Levelland. Survivors include his wife,

Merchant. Budzak, 82, died on November 27 at 6406 Seven Rivers

and Son Mortuary. Budzak was born on November 21, 1917, in
Detroit, Mich., to John Budzak and Anastasia (Philips) Budzak.
He was never married. He was an Able Seaman in the US Merchant
Marines and served during WWII in the US Navy. He was a Catholic.
He is survived by guardians Donald and Rosemary Buechner of
Artesia, Stephanie Chavez of Phoenix, Ariz., and Donnie
Buechner of San Diego, California.

postmistress there for many years. She is survived by four
generations of nieces and nephews, including great-niece Kay
Needham of Artesia. She was preceded in death by brothers
Tommy, Ray, Lloyd, and Charles Watkins; sisters Hattie McKinney
and Florence Campbell.

She married Virlon Robert Griffin in Cresco, Iowa, on
June 16, 1940. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Virlon, in Roswell, NM, in March 1999. Survivors include
her daughter Andrea, son-in-law Bill Carpenter, and grandson
Christopher; another daughter Gloria Hoglund, and husband
George Hoglund. Joint memorial services for Marion and

She moved to Weed, NM in 1941 and on to Artesia in 1942. She
was a member of Hermosa Church of Christ in Artesia. She then
moved to Lebanon, Ore., in 1964. She is survived by sons Hallis
Grissom of Portales, NM, James Howard of Ada, OK, H. Stephen
Grissom and Herbert "Red" Grissom, both of Lebanon; daughters
Dorothy Younger of Artesia and Zelpha Carter of Elgin, TX; brother
Stephen Everett Winters of Aztec, NM; sister Mary Belle Merideth
of Roswell, NM; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple
Heart and the Bronze Star. He lived in Artesia from 1960 to 1980.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine Kuettner of Georgetown, Ga.;

Landreth of Carlsbad, NM. Landreth, 80, died on December 20 at
Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad. Cremation has taken place.
Landreth was born on January 31, 1919, to Charles Calloway
Landreth and Viola Grace Wallace Landreth (later Horton) in
Centrahoma, Okla. He was a Choctaw Indian and attended Indian
boarding schools at Antlers and Ardmore, Okla. He married Vera
Alice Hallum on October 7, 1937. He served in the US Navy
during WWII. He taught and was a superintendent of schools in
Cloud Chief, Frances and Fitzhugh, Oklahoma. He began teaching
in Artesia in 1959. He is survived by sons David H. Landreth and
Raymond Landreth, both of Carlsbad, and Vernon E. Landreth of
Norman, Okla.; brother John Landreth of Carlsbad; sisters Patricia
Marine of Catoosa, Okla., Johnola Rowe of Rocky Mountain, Virginia,
Sabra Ann Landreth and Mahanna Jo Landreth; nine granchildren; and
several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
wife in 1991; daughter Betty Lou Landreth in 1998; and sisters

Funeral services were October 27 for Edrie Smith of Lake
Arthur, NM. Services were held at Calvary Baptist Church in
Portales, NM. Smith, 91, died October 23 at her home. Interment
was at Portales Cemetery. She was born April 7, 1908, in
Leonard, Tex., the daughter of Ellen and James Monroe Frazier.
She married Luther Smith in Bonham, Tex., on October 25, 1926.
They moved to Lake Arthur in 1928. He preceded her in death in
1932. In 1946 she moved to Portales. She was a member of
Calvary Baptist Church in Portales. She moved back to Lake Arthur
in 1994, and became a member of First Baptist Church there.
Survivors include son Bill Smith, wife Wilma, of Portales;
daughter Vera Foster, husband Charles, of Lake Arthur; seven
grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by one sister; nine brothers; one grandson, Michael Foster,
who died as an infant; and son Wesley F. (Bud) Smith, who died in
January 1990.

lived in Artesia. Walker was preceded in death by her husband

McAllister, Okla., and Susan Walker of Colorado.

preceded in death by brothers Earl Davidson of Santa Fe, NM, and

on December 9, in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico
