BRUTON, JANIE DELLA COWLING
CARLSBAD - Janie Della Cowling Bruton, born Sept. 1, 1908, on the family ranch in
Gaines County, Texas, passed away Feb. 26, 2005, at Silver Creek Place, an
assisted living facility owned by her granddaughter in Azle, Texas.
Although Janie's last days were spent in an adult care facility, she was
surrounded by loving family and friends who worked there. Her great-granddaughter,
employed at Silver Creek Place, was her primary caregiver.
She is survived by seven great-grandchildren, seven grandchildren and three
daughters: Jackie Bruton Conley of Fort Worth, Texas, Pauline Bruton Terry of
Albuquerque, N.M., and Doris Bruton Carleton of Malaga, N.M., along with spouses
of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Jack Arthur Bruton, whom she married in November 1933. Jack died in
August 1988.
Janie will be buried in Seagraves, Texas, next to her husband of more than 50
years and in close proximity to her parents, Susie Jane Wise Cowling and Albert
Durham Cowling. Other family members buried in the same cemetery include her
father-in-law and mother-in-law; brother, A.D. Cowling, along with numerous other
nieces and nephews. Other brothers who preceded her in death include John Durham
Cowling and Edwin Cowling; plus three first cousins who were reared as foster
brothers when their parents passed away: Leonard Wise, Lee Wise and Charlie Wise.
She is survived by one brother, William Tallie (Ty) Cowling of California.
A memorial service for Janie was held at Silver Creek Place on Monday, Feb. 28,
2005. Burial services will take place on March 12, 2005, at the Seagraves, Texas,
cemetery. Janie's life will be remembered for her independent spirit, her
Christian witness and devotion, her love of all things outdoors and her tremendous
capacity with math and "figuring." Even into her ninth decade, she could add,
subtract, divide and multiply numbers "in her head" faster than most people could
use a calculator to compute the same transactions. When she was given a handheld
calculator for balancing her checkbook, Janie mastered its use, but then did the
calculations in her head to see if the calculator was right. Finally, she
discontinued the use of the calculator as "completely worthless."
We will miss her presence here on earth, but will cherish the heritage that she
gave us until we join her in eternal rest. God be with her 'til we meet again

his sister Vivian.
He met the love of his life, Mildred Lois Gibson, at the Elida Baptist Church.
They married on Dec. 15, 1944. Their son Ronnie was born in 1945 and Will went

Liles Egg Farm. This earned him the nickname "Pullet" at the mine.
In 1960, he was able to quit the mines to devote work full time at the egg farm.
His wife and kids worked at his side to build their dream. Their last venture was
building Westwinds Mobile Home Park, where the chicken houses had been. They
retired in 1996 when they sold the park.
After semi-retiring, they joined the Good Sam's Club and were active RVers. In
1983, they joined the Shuffles and Ruffles Square Dance Club and traveled around
the country dancing and making new friends. In the last few years, they have been
