Barbara S. Abernathy

LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. — Barbara S. Abernathy, 65, of Longboat Key, Fla., died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005. A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris. Burial will follow at Flint Memorial
Park. Family will receive friends at the funeral home 4-9 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Wellness Community, 3900 Clark Road, Sarasota, FL 34233 or the Hospice of South West Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
Barbara was born May 16, 1940, in Jerome, Ark., the daughter of Wesley and Bernice (Pamplin) Greenway. She retired from the Whirlpool Corp. in LeVergne, Tenn.
Survivors include five children, Rhonda Royer, of Longboat Key, Philip Abernathy of Carlsbad, Joanna Harden of Peoria, Ariz., Kimberly Dibble of Coppell, Texas, and Jeremy Abernathy of Carlsbad; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Karen Duquette of Mt. Morris; and brothers, Bill Greenway of Vassar, and Garry Greenway of Mt. Morris.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Michael Irby Abernathy, Charles Aaron Abernathy and Joel Glen Abernathy; two grandsons, Matthew and Michael Abernathy; parents, Wesley and Bernice Greenway; and a sister, Cheryl Stewart.

Henry P. Aldinger

CARLSBAD — A memorial service for Henry P. Aldinger, 89, of North Edward Street, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Elena Yoder of VistaCare Hospice officiating.
The Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors.
Mr. Aldinger passed away Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at his home.
Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Henry P. Aldinger was born Jan. 6, 1916, to Henry and Bertha Chapman Aldinger in the Elk Grove, Calif., area, where he was raised and graduated from high school. Henry spent several years working for his father, with the reclamation district and in a garage learning to be a mechanic.
He joined the National Guard in 1940 and in 1941 transferred to the regular Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash.
On June 7, 1942, he married Helen Vincent at Fort Lewis and was then transferred to Fort Knox, Ky., where he attended Officer Candidate School and received tank training. He was assigned to an armored cavalry unit and left for Europe on D-Day from New York aboard the Queen Mary. He served in England, France, Belgium and Holland and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, Henry moved to El Centro, where he remained active in the National Guard and farmed for 17 years before going to work for the Imperial Irrigation District.
Henry and Helen moved to Carlsbad after his retirement, where he enjoyed his hobbies of collecting old tools and creating beautiful fret work carvings. He was a member of the Aughtred Society (collectors of antique slide rules) and the Early American Industries Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Aldinger; daughter, Linda Brown and husband Jim of Carlsbad; grandson, Greg Brown and wife Julie and daughter Tailor of Carlsbad; granddaughter, Margo DeLong and husband Jim and their children Christopher and Jordyn of Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.; sister, Patricia Wells of Banning, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Clara Littlefield of Missouri

Mrs. Almanza was born November 1, 1955 in Artesia, NM; the daughter of Roberto T. Rodriguez and Elvira (Carrasco) Rodriguez.
On August 6, 1983 she was married to Ernest Almanza in Artesia, N.M. She was a lifelong resident of Artesia.
She was a Special Education Teacher at Artesia Junior High School and member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church. She was President of the Volleyball Boosters, and Vice President of the Basketball Boosters.
She was preceded in death by her father-in-law Ernest Almanza and mother-in-law Anita Almanza.
Survivors include her husband Ernest Almanza of the family home; parents Roberto and Elvira Rodriguez of Artesia; daughter Ashley N. Almanza of Artesia; brother Raul Rodriguez and wife Lorrene of Artesia; sisters Selena Garcia of Artesia, Terry Rodriguez of Artesia, and Jeanie Garcia of Artesia; brother-in-law Anthony Almanza of Artesia; sisters-in-law Maria Almanza of Washington DC, and Julie Almanza of Artesia; 4 nieces and 5 nephews.

Robert E. Billstrom

LITCHFIELD, Minn. — Robert E. Billstrom, 96, of Litchfield, died at home on Monday, Aug. 15. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, 821 E. Fifth St., Litchfield. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass at the church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Robert is survived by daughters, Dorothy Moen, June (Gene) Blanski, Barbara (Martin) Weidenbach, Nancy (Michael) Perusse, and Deborah (Stephen) Dufresne; son, John (Darlene) Billstrom; and son-in-law, James Duerr. He is also survived by 35 devoted grandchildren, 70 cherished great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 74 years, Marcella; daughter, Mary Ellen Duerr; grandson, Daniel Duerr; and son-in-law, Milton Moen.

Erminia Castillo passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2005 at her home.

Erminia Castillo was born Feb. 4, 1934, to Albino and Juana Juarez Pedroza in Taft, Texas. She married Teodoro Castillo on Jan. 28, 1934, in Gregory, Texas. She spent most of her life working at home taking care of her family and helping in the fields. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting. Erminia spent many peaceful hours reading from her Bible and was very involved in San Jose Catholic Church activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Teodoro Castillo; 10 children, Roberto Castillo and wife Esperanza of Carlsbad, Concepcion Buendia and husband Ben of Carlsbad, Enocencio Castillo and wife Thelma of Carlsbad, Maria Trujillo and husband Pablo of Carlsbad, Jose Castillo and wife Mary of Carlsbad, Manuel Castillo, Sr. and Hazel Lara of Carlsbad, Antonio Castillo of Carlsbad, Consuelo Collier of Carlsbad, Guadalupe Castillo and wife Alice of Carlsbad, and Carmen Hernandez and husband David of Carlsbad; 50 grandchildren; 85 great grandchildren; and 22 great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Hernandez, Robert Castillo, Jr., Joe Castillo, Jr., Manuel Buendia, Florencio Ruiz, Jr., Sammy Castillo, Lawrence Castillo and Tony Trujillo.

He was an owner and operator of Corona Construction, and a member of Victory Life Fellowship.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

She was a homemaker and member of Westside Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Gus Dean Cummins, a brother, and two sisters. John N. Dallmann

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — John N. Dallmann, 76 of Green River, Wyo., passed away July 31, 2005, at the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County following a sudden illness.
He was born in Lonestar, Texas, on Nov. 21, 1928, the son
of the late John Noonkester and Sadie Dallmann. After the death of his parents he was adopted by his maternal grandparents, Augusta and Janet Dallmann and raised in Carlsbad.
Mr. Dallmann attended schools in Carlsbad.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Dallmann married Florence Potter in Las Vegas, Nev., on May 24, 1950. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2004.
He worked at the U.S. Potash Company in Carlsbad before moving to Green River in 1961 to work for Stauffer Chemical Co. He retired from Stauffer Chemical Co. in 1986. Mr. Dallmann and his family also operated the Coin Laundry in Green River for 14 years.
His interests included spending time with his family and friends, reading, playing pinochle and being of value to everyone who knew him.
He is survived by three sons, Keith Dallmann of Salt Lake City, Kenneth Dallmann and wife Pam of Evanston, Wyo., and Joseph Dallmann and wife Leona of Albuquerque; four daughters, Vikki and husband Jessie Flores of Phoenix, Linda Prince and husband Darrell of Sherrills Ford, N.C., Cynthia GrandPre and husband Jerry of Green River and Dara Bobbitt and husband Leonard of Green River; one nephew, Richard Caldwell of Little Rock, Ark.; and one great-niece, 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Gary Dallmann; one great-grandson Gavin; and one sister.
A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 900 Hitching Post Drive, Green River, with Father Tom Sheridan conducting the services. Military graveside service and interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Green River. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.

Milagro M. Franco

Milagro passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at Washington Ranch.

Milagro Mia Martinez Franco was born Nov. 12, 1990, to Priscilla Martinez Franco.
Milagro loved life and touched the hearts of all she met. She enjoyed drawing, dancing, and dressing up with her sister Alegria. Milagro loved her dog Buster and enjoyed dressing him up in pink, her favorite color. She loved music and was learning to play the viola. Milagro always thought of her cousin Ricco as her older brother. Milagro is dearly loved and will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her great grandparents Manuel and Simona Garcia.
She is survived by her mother, Priscilla Martinez Franco; sister, Alegria Franco; grandparents, Pilo and Emma Martinez; aunt, Perla Martinez; uncle, Porf Martinez and wife Grace; and three cousins, Ricco Martinez, Scott Sing and Megan Martinez.

She was married to Jesus Ramirez. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and by one son and one daughter.
A longtime Artesia resident, she was a cook for many local restaurants, and a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Survivors include daughter Celia Galindo of Artesia; sister Baudelia Galindo of Guadalajara, Mexico; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Daniel Rostro Garcia was born May 31, 1954, in Carlsbad to Antonio and Amparo Rostro Garcia. He was raised and educated in Carlsbad, graduating from Carlsbad Senior High School in 1972. Danny loved music and made his living playing the organ or keyboard for San Jose Catholic Church and Epworth United Methodist Church.
He was an avid Cavemen football fan and enjoyed walking and listening to his police scanner. He was a member of the Eddy County Mounted Patrol and San Jose Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Jesus and Antonia Rostro.
Survivors include his brothers, Antonio R. Garcia Jr. and wife Gloria, of Albuquerque, and Henry Garcia and wife Lydia, of Elko, Nev.; uncles, Henry Rostro, of Santa Fe, Johnny Rostro, of Carlsbad, and Tony Rostro, of Carlsbad; aunts, Rachel Rostro, Beatrice Rostro and Angie Rostro, all of Carlsbad; and one nephew and seven nieces.

H.W. ‘Red’ Gilbert

KUNA, Idaho — H. W. “Red” Gilbert, of Idaho and formerly of Carlsbad, passed away Aug. 5, 2005, in Kuna, Idaho. He was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Haleburg, Ala., the only child of Allie J. and James B. Gilbert.
Red grew up and was schooled in Alabama, graduating from Fairfield High School in 1931. After high school, he worked for Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. In 1943, he moved to Galveston, Texas, to work for the Tin Processing Corp. of Texas City. He met Katherine in Galveston, and they were married Aug. 31, 1945. In 1957, they moved to Carlsbad, where he worked for National Potash Co. He retired in 1973. Red and Katherine built their home in La Huerta, where they were among a handful of people who organized and started the La Huerta Volunteer Fire Dept., an organization he was very proud of. Red served as the fire department treasurer for many years, until he was no longer capable of responding to fires. Due to Katherine’s health, they moved to Idaho in April 2005.
Red was an avid woodworker; countless hours were spent working in his shop with his many tools. He was always building or making something for family and friends. He loved hunting and fishing with close friends and his grandsons. He was a member of the Texas Masons and served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves.
His survivors include his wife, Katherine; daughters, Jane Coleman, of Carlsbad, Margaret and Larry Roberts, of Kuna, and Laura and Harold Mashaw, of Kennewick, Wash.; grandchildren, Joe Parker and Tammy, David Parker and Lori, Trey Roberts and Robin, Tanna Nye and Rusty, and Ty, Adam and Garret Mashaw; great-grandchildren, Hanna and Russell Parker, Katy, Kell and Tucker Parker, Samantha, Mason and Phillip Roberts, and Callen Nye; niece, Sandra Reynolds; and Beverly and Ed Campbell.
At his request, direct cremation has taken place, and there will be no formal services. Memorial contributions may be made to the La Huerta Volunteer Fire Dept., 1724 Muscatel Ave., Carlsbad, N.M. 88220.

Ron P. Gresham

ABILENE, Texas — Ron P. Gresham, 59, passed from this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at home with his wife, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Ron was a man of many faces throughout his life: policeman, firefighter paramedic, state trooper, airplane pilot, helicopter pilot and instructor and security aide overseas.
He was born in Carlsbad, but had lived in Texas, Florida, Missouri, Canada, and Saudi Arabia. He met his wife, Catherine, in Saudi Arabia and was married to her for the past 15 years.
Ron is survived by his wife Catherine; mother, Doris Doney; sister, Debbie Partin; grandson, Jesse; and nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed by family and friends in the U.S. and Scotland and his beloved dogs and cats.
His father, Perry Gresham, preceded him in death.

Mr. Hatch was born January 26, 1921 in Rule, Texas; the son of Andrew Bascom Hatch and Cassey Beatrice (Anderson) Hatch.
On Oct. 21, 1937 he was married to Lorena Avent in Hagerman, N.M. He came to Artesia in area in 1931 from Texas and moved to the Pinon area in 1972.
He was a Rancher and worked for the Chaves County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the Pinon Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, 2 sisters, a grandson and a great-grandson.
Survivors include his wife Lorena Hatch of the family home; sons Darvin Roy Hatch of Quitman, Georgia, and Charles Ray Hatch of Roswell, N.M.; daughters Bonnie Lou Mitchell of Carlsbad, N.M. and Betty Louise Goode of Hugoton, Kansas; brothers James E. She received her master’s of business education degree from Northern Colorado University in Greeley, Colo. June taught school in the Carlsbad public schools and at New Mexico State University-Carlsbad for 36½ years. She retired in 1986 as a professor emeritus of business.
She was a 50-plus year member of P.E.O. and a long time member of First Baptist Church. June loved spending time with family and friends and spending summers in Estes Park, Colo.
She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Haywood Fowler and husband Scott of Las Cruces; granddaughter, Jenifer Michelle Bohart and husband Sean of Phoenix; great-granddaughter, Sara Jewel Bohart; sisters, Lelloine Gunning of Greeley and Jean Allen of Fresno, Calif.

After his discharge, Everett moved to Carlsbad, where he was employed with the post office as a clerk. He worked there until his retirement.
He married Winona Garrett on Aug. 6, 1947, in Carlsbad. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 7, Artesia Senior Citizens and the postal union.
Everett is survived by his wife, “Zippy,” of the family home; one sister, Alta Gregston of Carlsbad; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Jay Lewis, Clay McGonagill, E.T. Holland, Larry Smith, Dale Smith, Wayne Worley, Jerry Needham and Tim Worley.

Louise Henry was born March 25, 1918, in Clarksville, Texas, to Cadmus and Eva Blankenship Bean.
She married D.O. Henry on May 5, 1934, in Clarksville at the age of 16, and was a wonderful wife and mother for 71 years. Louise always took great pride in her family and was a wonderful cook. She spent much of her time working side by side with D.O. in several businesses in the Artesia area, a pleasure they both enjoyed. Louise always kept a small dog at her side through the years, each and every one loved and each and every one named Bunny. She will be greatly missed by her family, neighbors and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, D. O. Henry of Carlsbad; and four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Father Alcuin Hunter, O.F.M., Conv., died Aug. 4, 2005, in Santa Fe. He was born to Matthew and Winifred Anne Devine Hunter on July 5, 1936, in Durham, England. His family came to live in Canada when he was a youth.
In 1959, he entered the Conventual Franciscan Order, professing his solemn vows on Oct. 6, 1963. He was ordained a priest on Feb. 18, 1967, at St. Paul Cathedral, St. Paul, Minn.
Father Alcuin spent most of his priestly life in the Southwest, serving first at San Jose Parish, Carlsbad, and later at Our Lady of Grace, Loving; St. Helena, Hobbs; Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mesilla Park; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, El Paso, Texas; and our Lady of Grace in Artesia. At the time of his death, he was stationed at St. Edward Friary, Carlsbad, assisting on weekends at St. Clare Church, Eunice, and also helping from time to time in Monahans and Kermit, Texas.
Father Alcuin was State Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Downtown Lions Club and Regional Spiritual Assistant for the Secular Franciscans.
Father Alcuin is survived by a brother, Dennis; sister-in-law, Mary Hunter; and five nephews, all of whom live in Canada.

She is survived by daughters, June Amarallys (Lou Rillos) of Arvada, Colo., and Sue Ann (Ray Katz) of Tucson. Beula will be missed by seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Beula and Joe were raised in Wisconsin and taught school in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Idaho, Virginia and New Mexico before retiring to Missouri and Arkansas. Their last years were spent in Golden, Colo. Beula was a “snowbird” to Arizona for the last 13 years.

Services are scheduled at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, August 20, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Manuel H. Melendez, 1109 N. 6th St., Artesia, New Mexico.
Mr. Melendez, 79, died Thursday, August 18, 2005 at his home.
Burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Rosco, Martin Catano, Michael Anthony Thomas, Jose Mendoza, Roy Salsberry, and Simon Salazar.
A rosary is also scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Grace Church.
Mr. Melendez was born November 14, 1925 in Loraine, Texas; the son of Juan Melendez and Rafaela Melendez.
On October 2, 1949 he was married to Ydubina Bihl in Presidio, Texas. He came to Artesia in 1951 from Texas.
He was a farm laborer and member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister.
Survivors include his wife Ydubina Melendez of the family home; sons Manuel Melendez of Artesia, and Francisco Melendez of Artesia; daughters Helen Mariscal and husband Santos of Artesia, Josie Melendez of Albuquerque, N.M., and Carol Thomas of Sierra Vista, Arizona; brothers Jose Melendez of Artesia, and Jesus Melendez of Phoenix, Arizona; sisters Rosa Barriga of Phoenix, and Magdelena Melendez of Phoenix; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Mae Melvin was born July 6, 1926, in West Frankfort, Ill., to Beaulah and Harley Beaver. At the age of 15, she married her school sweetheart, Elvis E. Melvin in Jackson, Mo., on Oct. 5, 1941. The Melvin family moved to Loving in 1955, where she raised her family and has lived for the past 50 years.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and wonderful homemaker. Her greatest joy was her family. She volunteered much of her time working as a Sunday school teacher and a bookkeeper for Loving Assembly of God.
Dorothy was preceded in death by a son, David Richard (Rick) Melvin.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Elvis Melvin; a son, James Melvin and wife Karen of Carlsbad; daughters, Jo Ann Holman and husband Dennis of Carlsbad, and Sharon Kay Mecklenburg and husband Ronnie of San Angelo, Texas; and 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Allen was born February 7, 1924 in Alamosa, Colorado; the son of James S. Mills and Olga Lee (Watson) Mills.
He moved to Littlefield, Texas at the age of three; and came to Artesia at the age of seven.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was very proud of his service on the USS Pennsylvania as a seagoing marine.
In 1947 he was married to Nida Dunnam in Artesia. She preceded him in death in 1953.
He married Ellonia Callahan in 1955. In 1985 he was married to Tommy Sanders.
He owned and operated Mill's Upholstery in Artesia since 1948. He was a member of First Baptist Church; a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife Nida; by a daughter Janie Lair; and by brothers Tharon W. Mills and Sanders Lee Mills.
Survivors include children Judith Mills Wong and husband Norbert of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jo Lynn Hope and husband Sonny of Artesia, Mitzi Baker and husband Dave of Lakewood, Colo., Monica Parker and husband Sid of Tulsa, Okla., Craig Mills of Farmington, N.M., and Mendi Dunn and husband Jeff of Tulsa; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous surrogate children and many friends.

Reyes moved to the Loving area, where she raised her family while Heliodoro worked in the mines and as a ranch hand in several southeast New Mexico communities. She became a widow at the age of 39 and raised her family without her husband, providing for them in every way possible.
Reyes enjoyed bingo, sewing and gardening. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Reyes was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Heliodoro in 1954; six sons; two daughters; one grandson; one granddaughter; three sisters; and four brothers.
She is survived by daughters, Paula Martinez of Las Cruces, Margarita Parraz and husband Adan of Carlsbad, Tomasa Villareal of Carlsbad, Manuela Echavarria and husband Rafael of Loving, and Valentina Murillo and husband Nestor of Lovington; sisters, Concha Parraz and Petra Melendez both of California; and 52 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

After working for various potash mines, he later was employed by Sears as a service manager and in television repair, retiring after 25 years of service. Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Harold was preceded in death by his mother and father.

She was a member of UAW in Long Beach, Calif., and was a volunteer for a Catholic Church thrift store in Corona, Calif. She was also a homemaker and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Donna enjoyed bowling, playing bingo, traveling, casinos and shopping.

Guadalupe “Lupe” Renteria was born Nov. 4, 1953, to Joe S. and Trinidad Valenzuela Franco in Carlsbad. Lupe was raised and attended school in Carlsbad.
She married Luis Renteria on Feb. 18, 1984, and was employed by ECEC as a secretary/receptionist until her health forced her to retire in 2004.
She freely volunteered her time and energy supporting her daughters in their many activities including soccer, basketball, cheerleading, Business Professionals of America and any other endeavor in which parents’ participation as a sponsor or chaperone was needed. Lupe was not only actively involved in her daughters’ lives, but was also a friend and role model for the many, many children she came in contact with each day. Her family teased that “when you went shopping with Lupe, it took twice as long because everyone wanted to stop and talk with her.”
Lupe’s hobbies included sewing, crafts, baking, riding horses and to Luis’s dismay, rearranging the furniture. She was a devoted member of San Jose Catholic Church, and will always be remembered as a wonderful friend, a person who loved life and someone who truly cared.
Lupe was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, Larry Franco.
She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Luis Renteria of Carlsbad; daughters, Olivia Renteria of Albuquerque and Vanessa Renteria of Carlsbad; her father, Joe S. Franco of Carlsbad; brothers, Joe V. Valentina was a strong and humble person who greatly loved and was involved with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always remembered and cared for her neighbors, friends and acquaintances and was loved by all of them. She was a member of San Jose Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four children, Enedina, Frankie, Lionel and Luis Sanchez.

CARLSBAD — A graveside service for Charles E. Siepel, 87, of Orchard Lane, was held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Carlsbad Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Bruce of Epworth United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation was held Tuesday at West Funeral Home.
Mr. Siepel died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Landsun Health Service Center.
Arrangements are by West Funeral Home.
Charles E. Siepel was born Feb. 12, 1918, in McDough County, Ill., to Isom E. and Flora Twitchell Siepel. He was raised and educated in Illinois.
In 1943, he was stationed in Carlsbad with the Army Air Corps. Here he met his future wife, Martha Antle. They were married on Nov. 17, 1944, in Monmouth, Ill., after which they returned to Carlsbad.
Charles was employed by Southwestern Public Service Co. for 35 years, retiring as a supervising engineer. He was a hobby farmer who enjoyed rebuilding antique tractors and machinery to harvest alfalfa and pecans. He also enjoyed walking and woodworking.
He was a man of integrity with a keen sense of humor. He was a loving and supportive husband, dedicated father and mentor and grandfather to scalawag kids.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
He is survived by his wife of the family home; sons, Norman Siepel and wife Susan of Carlsbad, Ronald Siepel and wife Donna of Monticello, Minn., Charles Siepel and wife Marlene of Lordsburg, and Terry Siepel of Carlsbad; brother, George Siepel of Plymouth, Ill.; sister, Margaret Siepel of Plymouth, Ill.; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

ALBUQUERQUE — Betty Thomas Skinner, 74, a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005.
A past resident of Carlsbad, she was born Sunday, March 1, 1931, in Amherst, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R.C. “Moon” Skinner.
Mrs. Skinner is survived by daughters, Donna Duke and husband Bob of Corrales, and Susan Howard and husband John of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan and Brent Jenkins and Allison Anne and Rob Howard; and one great-grandchild, Pele Jenkins.
A funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Albuquerque. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.

A celebration mass is scheduled at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, August 27, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Manuel Villa Sosa, Artesia, New Mexico.
Mr. Sosa, 76, died Tuesday, August 23, 2005 in Artesia.
Burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Salsberry, Felix Fierro, Jr., Soki Segura, Cepe Martinez, John Molina and Tommy Ray Chavarria. Honorary pallbearers will be Eulogio Jaramillo, Paul Salberry, Frank Villa, Manuel Molina, Ruben Salas, and Pete Baca.
A vigil service is also scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Grace Church. Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary beginning at 10 A.M. Friday.
Mr. Sosa was born September 26, 1928 in Dexter, New Mexico; the son of Florencio Sosa and Juana (Villa) Sosa.
On Sept. 27, 1950 he was married to Natalia Salsberry in Artesia. He was a lifelong Artesia area resident.
He served in the Air Force during World War II and Korea.
He was a truck driver for Broom Transportation and Brewer Oil, and was also owner of Sosa Tire. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, P.T.A. in school, Boy Scouts, charter member of the Moose Lodge, Urban Renewal Commission, Local Draft Board, and enjoyed woodworking, fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Leroy Sosa, great-grandchildren Bianca Sosa and Jeremiah Palma, a brother John Sosa and a sister Tillie Moya.
Survivors include his wife Natalia Sosa of the family home; best friend Felix Fierro of Artesia; daughters Celeste Martinez and husband Cepe of Artesia, and Sandra Sosa of Artesia; son Lawrence Sosa of Artesia; adopted daughters Elizabeth Jaramillo of Los Lunas, N.M., and Evelyn Jojola of Los Lunas; brother Stephen Sosa of Fayetteville, N. Carolina; sisters Virginia Sosa of Visalia, Calif., and Christine Baggett of Tulare, Calif.; sister-in-law Elida Segura of Artesia; 6 grandchildren Naomi Tarango, Lonnie Tarango, Levi Justice, Adrianne Justice, and Brittany Huerta all of Artesia and John Anthony Sosa of Phoenix, Arizona; and ten great-grandchildren.

Lula Mae Stephens
MIDLAND, Texas — Funeral services for Lula Mae Stephens, 86, of Midland, Texas, are set for 11 a.m. today at First Assembly of God, with the Rev. Mike Hanks officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Odessa.
Lula Mae Stephens went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 30, 2005 after a progressive illness.
Lula Mae was born May 11, 1919, to Frank and Nancy Vaughan, in Duncan, Okla. She moved to Colorado City at an early age. Lula Mae was raised there and that is where she met the love of her life, H.N. Stephens. They were married June 6, 1942.
They then moved to Snyder, Texas, in 1951, where they raised their two daughters. Lula Mae worked as a caregiver while the family lived in Snyder. In September 1965, the family moved to Midland, where Lula Mae continued to work as a caregiver at various health care facilities, including Park View Manor, Terrace Gardens, Trinity Towers and Manor Park. Lula Mae then became a private sitter. This was the position she held when she ended her life-long calling of caring for others with love. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, H.N. Stephens; six brothers, Henry, Raymond, Herman, Howard, Elmer and Donald Vaughan; and three sisters, Loriene Calloway, Coriene Banks and Mary Price.
Lula Mae’s memory will be cherished in the hearts of her family. She is survived by her daughters, Joyce Baugh, of Midland, and Mary Helen McCormick and husband James, of Carlsbad; her sister, Ruby Maxwell, of Cross Plains; brother-in-law, Ernest Stephens, of Abilene, Texas; four grandsons, Steven Baugh and wife Misty, Chris Baugh and wife Mandy, of Midland, James Allen McCormick and wife Danita, and David Brian McCormick and wife Jonnice, of Carlsbad; as well as five great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. McLarey, Dr. Vogel and the staff of Manor Park.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Cook, Nicholas Cook, Robert Holder, Chris Angley, Michael Young and Joe Lyles.

Arthur B. Thomas

CARLSBAD — Arthur Thomas was delivered by his father, Dr. Robert A. Thomas, an early pioneer physician, in Magdelena, N.M., on Jan. 3, 1910. He was a graduate of Montazuma College in Las Vegas, N.M., and received his
master’s at the University of Southern California. While living in Magdelena, he owned several businesses and was the Socorro County school superintendent. He also served as regent of the Socorro School of Mines.
Moving to Carlsbad in 1943, he became personnel manager of Potash Company of America. He held this position until he retired at 68 years of age. He and his wife, Dorothy, celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2001, a few months prior to her death. They were able to live in their home until they were in their 90s, which is a rare occurrence. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge.
His son, Dr. Robert G. Thomas, was in attendance at his death, which came on July 28, 2005, in Berrien Springs, Mich.
He is survived by his son, Robert; daughter-in-law, Lora Lee (O’Cheskey) of Berrien Springs; and four grandchildren, Jonathan of La Jolla, Calif., David of Long Island, N.Y., Janet of Chicago, and Alan of Gig Harbor, Wash. He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren.
There are plans to have a memorial service for both Dorothy and Arthur the last week of September at the Presbyterian Church with their ashes to be interred in the rose garden columbarium. Anyone wishing to attend can contact the church after Sept. 15 for time and place.

Dennis worked for the city of Carlsbad and later moved to Austin where he worked for Payton Lumber Co. He lived in Carlsbad for the past 12 years.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father; brother, Bert W. Titus Jr.; and sister, Karen Brown.

Harvey Jo Chance Valenzuela

CARLSBAD — Harvey Jo Chance Valenzuela passed away Aug. 21, 2005, at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque. Chance was born March 1, 2005, with his twin sister Taylor, and he fought long and hard those five months, captivating the hearts of all who were privileged to know him.
He was preceded in death by his very special great-grandpa whom he was named after, Harvey Hale.
Chance is survived by many family members who will miss him: his mother and father, Rene and Marci Joseph Valenzuela; twin sister, Taylor Rayn Valenzuela; brothers, Alexander Valenzuela and Guage Williams; great-grandmother, Modene Sheperd; grandmother, Harva Joan Joseph; grandfather, Mike Terpening; grandmother and grandfather, Rene and Maryann Valenzuela; and great-grandmother, Mary Gamboa. Also many aunts and uncles: Gary and Marla Gingrich, and Maria and Raymond Valenzuela, great-aunts Bonnie Evans and Jean Henson and great-uncle Tom Terpening.
He will also be greatly missed by cousins who looked forward to holding and spoiling him, Moriah, Benaiah, ShayAnn and Jadyn Gingrich and honorary aunts and uncles Gene and Eloise Taylor and Roxann Urquidez.
Chance formed a very special bond with his Granny Modene and even though he had it rough from the time he was born, he was good-natured, lovable and an intense fighter.
His family holds tightly to the hope of seeing him in paradise, in the arms of his great-grandpa, happy and perfectly healthy.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Playground on the Pecos, adjacent to the Riverwalk Recreation Center.

Mrs. Warren was born May 7, 1923 in Helena, Arkansas; the daughter of Silas Corley and Martha Lucille (Thomas) Corley.
On June 24, 1939 she was married to Ernest Eldo Warren in Marvel, Arkansas. She came to Artesia in 1953 from West Helena, Arkansas. He preceded her in death Jan. 8, 1982.
She worked as a bookkeeper, was a member of the First Baptist Church, and a former member of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents, step-fathers Harry Ramsey and Herbert Simms, a son Ernest E. Warren Jr., grandsons Ray Gwynne and Duane Shaw, grand-daughter Christy Patterson, sons-in-law Tom Edwards, Gary Gwynne and Harry Jorren.
Survivors include her daughters Carolyn Edwards of Longview, Texas, Marilyn Shaw and husband Harry of Ruidoso, N.M., Martha Patterson and husband Ed of Artesia, and Nancy Jorren of Artesia; brother Donald Corley of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; sister Thelma Hatcher of Dover, Arkansas; eleven grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; and twenty-one great-great-grandchildren.

Jewell F. Weaver

CARLSBAD — Jewell F. Weaver, a long-time resident of Carlsbad, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, in Plano, Texas. Mrs. Weaver was born in Iola, Texas, on June 21, 1913, to Walter and Roberta Franklin. She spent most of her
childhood in Maysville, Okla., along with her three brothers who preceded her in death, and sister Lillian, still living.
She married Jack T. Wigley in 1932 in Maysville. They had five children. Through the years, the family lived in Capitan, White City, and then Carlsbad for a span of 60 years. Most of her lifetime, Mrs. Weaver worked outside the home, especially enjoying a long association with Pete Panagopoulos at Deluxe Cafe.
Jewell was very well known in Carlsbad and had many friends. She loved to watch the stock market and talk about politics. She was secretary-treasurer of the Carlsbad Investment Club.
She was predeceased by Gordon Sloan, her husband of 10 years, and Eugene Weaver, to whom she was married for 15 years.
Mrs. Weaver’s beloved son Ben C. Wigley of Phoenix died in 1988, and grandson Curtis Wigley died in California in 2004. She is survived by son Jack L. Wigley and his wife Baby, formerly of Carlsbad and now living in Streetman, Texas; daughters Barbara Wilcox and Judy Pulice of Dallas; and daughter and son-in-law Joanie and Scott Bibby of The Colony, Texas. She left 12 cherished grandchildren, including Pam Gough of Carlsbad and Jackie Dean Wigley of Gilbert, Ariz.; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at the Sparkman/Dickey Funeral Home in Dallas.

Jay Williams was born March 28, 1970, in Pasadena, Texas, to Thomas and Connie Heath Williams and was raised in Texas, Arizona and California.
He was a Christian, baptized at the age of 13. Jay enjoyed fishing and the outdoors and loved his family. Jay had a tendency to be stubborn and impatient, but his role as a parent was changing his lifestyle and he was becoming more responsible and enjoying his family. Jay was outspoken and always honest about what he thought. He had his bike and his family, which were the most important things to him. He was known as a friend you could always count on. Jay was video junkie and a very good cook.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Williams; grandfather, Hollis Heath; and grandmother, Alice Brymer.
He is survived by his wife, Angie Williams of the family home; children, Fox Williams, Darius Williams, Jaida Williams and Micki Lewis all of Carlsbad; his mother, Connie Williams of Glencoe, Ark.; a sister, Heather Williams of Omaha, Neb.; and grandparents, Mildred Heath of Carlsbad and Willard Brymer of Plainview, Texas.
Honorary pallbearers are Steven, Joe Ferrell, Gary Brymer, Jim Brymer, Lucky Heath and H.R. Heath.
