more than one fellow potter with wet clay while throwing on the wheels
behind the old Eisenhower Junior High, her love for making mud pies as
a child carried over into adult life.
Besides wet clay and hot kilns, she also loved art and music, particularly
the recorder.
She also enjoyed sewing, quilting and had a loving heart that went out
to animals of all kinds.
She worked at both the Carlsbad Museum and Pecos River Gallery until her
disability overtook her.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Wayne Jones; and brothers, Ed Burt
and John Burt.
If you are considering sending flowers, Kathy would have wished that you
send those funds to any of the organizations who are currently aiding
the hurricane survivors in New Orleans.
The family’s deepest thanks goes to the staffs of VistaCare and
Landsun who were there for her in her final days.

James J. Willis
CARLSBAD — James Joseph “Joe” Willis, 79, passed away
at home, surrounded by his wife, daughters and granddaughters.
Coach Joe Willis was born in Nara Visa, N.M., in 1926. He attended Melrose
High School, where he was a three-year letterman in football, basketball
and track. He won the high point man trophy and was the fastest man in
the 100-yard dash at the 1943 state track meet. Those were remarkable
feats because all schools competed against one another regardless of size.
After playing for the Melrose Buffaloes, he attended the University of
New Mexico on an athletic scholarship, where he lettered in football and
played in the 1944 Sun Bowl. In 1944, Joe also joined the Navy and served
as Quartermaster Second Class on an LST in the Pacific Theater of Operations
in the Philippine Liberation and Japan. After his discharge, he returned
to UNM and completed his bachelor’s degree and later his master’s
degree.
Joe began his coaching career in Espanola in 1949. He accepted his first
head coaching jobs in football and track and served as athletic director
of Espanola High School.
In 1956, Joe and Alyce moved to Carlsbad with their two daughters. Joe
accepted the head track and assistant football coaching positions. As
head track coach, he coached his teams to four district championships
and three state runner-up trophies. He was line coach when Carlsbad won
the state football championships in 1956, 1958, 1961 and 1962. Joe was
Cavemen head football coach from 1966 to 1968. During his coaching years,
he served as president of the New Mexico Coaches Association in 1964.
After retiring from coaching, Joe continued as Carlsbad’s athletic
director from 1967 to 1984. He represented District 4A on the NMAA Girl’s
Athletic Committee for 10 years because he believed in women’s ability
and right to play high school sports. He is considered a pioneer in bringing
women’s athletics into New Mexico’s schools. At one of the
first NMAA GAC meetings, many coaches only wanted to try volleyball or
softball, but Joe objected, saying that all girls’ sports should
be on the field of play. He was selected New Mexico High School Athletic
Director of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association in
1977.
During his tenure as athletic director, he introduced seven sports into
the Carlsbad High School girls’ athletic program and oversaw the
construction of the CHS gymnasium-natatorium complex, field house and
the baseball and softball fields.
Joe was inducted into the New Mexico Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991, the
year he watched his oldest granddaughter selected to the All-State basketball
team. At his induction, the members of his first football team from Espanola
High School came to the luncheon to honor him.
Joe was a romantic, and his love and devotion to his wife, Alyce Coffelt
Willis, was unwavering and a testament to the goodness of his marriage
of 58 years. Joe was a wonderful father and grandfather and loved his
family deeply and valued his many decades-long friendships. He will be
missed by his family and friends.
Every decision Joe made he made according to what was best for kids. He
taught his daughters and granddaughters to stand up for what is right
and to have the courage to follow through on those decisions. Both he
and Alyce instilled the importance of the content of a person’s
character, not race, religion or circumstances in his family. He left
his family a wonderful legacy.
He is survived by his wife, Alyce; his daughter and son-in-law, Jo Pat
and Forrest Wellman; his daughter and son-in-law, Jill and James Hadley;
his granddaughters, Robyn Wellman, Jennifer Hadley-White and Katy Wellman
and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held for the family in Melrose, N.M.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held for family and friends
at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church
in Carlsbad. Special guests will be his former students and athletes.
Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family has set up the Joe Willis Memorial Scholarship
through the Carlsbad Foundation, 116 S. Canyon St., Carlsbad, N.M., 88220.
