James F. “Jim” Tabor, 82, went home to meet his Lord on Oct. 6, 2005. He was born Oct. 6, 1923, to Lydia Henderson Tabor and Harrison Floyd Tabor in Heber Springs, Ark.
With only an eighth-grade education and a strong will to succeed, he leaves a legacy worth honoring.
He lived in Arkansas and Cowetta, Okla., in his childhood. He moved to Carlsbad in about 1960 and married the love of his life, Wilma Lawton, on Oct. 26, 1963. Jim claimed his three stepdaughters as his very own and loved and cherished them and their families.
He proudly served his country in World War II. He enlisted as a teenager and served for three years in the Pacific Theatre. He served in the 25th Infantry Division. He received the Purple Heart and several other ribbons and fought even after he was wounded.
Jim gave his heart to the Lord when he was nearly 70 years old. He was a member of Carlsbad First Assembly of God Church and in the past eight years has felt at home with his friends at Carlsbad First Church of the Nazarene.
He had a successful business as a paint contractor and paint store co-owner with his wife, as well as a furniture refinishing business in his garage shop. He was able to restore at least one piece of furniture for each member of his family.
His hobbies included country music — especially singer Jimmie Rodgers. He loved discussing politics and history.
During the last year, poor eyesight prevented him from driving, reading or working in the shop, but he never lost his zest for life, nor the determination to do all that he could to help himself and others. Everyone appreciated his sense of humor. His positive attitude endeared him to his caregivers. He will be missed more than he ever knew!
Wilma Tabor, his wife of 39 years, preceded him in death on Aug. 16, 2002.
Survivors include his three stepdaughters and their families, Sue Worley and husband Morris of Carlsbad, Jean Juszczyk and husband Frank of Silver City, and Kathryn Foster and husband Lloyd of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Gerald Lawton and Kenneth Lawton; sister-in-law, Janice Lawton of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions made to Golden Services Hospice, 800 W. Pierce St., Carlsbad; First Church of the Nazarene, 1010 W. Fox St., Carlsbad; or a charity of choice would be appreciated.
